Looking into 2026, our Unitarian Universalists Association gives us guidance into making a difference through Social Justice. They invite us to SIDE WITH LOVE. “Love is not passive. Love shows up. Love organizes. Love tells the truth and strains toward justice”.
1. First I would like us to feed the homeless by cooking and serving one supper every fourth Friday to the Salvation Army of Jefferson City. We have done this for years prior to Covid. Dave Berry has agreed to make a visit to the facility with me to learn the process. If you are new to our fellowship or a long-time member, please contact me so that a strong team can be built.
2. I would like to have a team devoted to Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty. This is a subject that is a concern to our UU Association. If this is a subject that interests you, please let me know. It is a way to make a difference to our prison population.
3. Missouri Jobs with Justice. This group works towards fairness for our Missouri workers. Missourians passed Proposition A by over 1.6 million Missouri votes. As a result last week the minimum wage was increased from $13.75 to $15 an hour The politicians have been unable to overturn our vote. If you are interested, there will be a state wide gathering January 21st, 11 am to speak directly to our legislators.
4. In the future we will be looking at ways to make our fellowship, City and state energy efficient. Rich Burdge will be heading that committee when the opportunity is present. If you are interested, please contact Rich.
And of course, remember to wear your bright yellow SIDE WITH LOVE shirt so folks know who we are.
With Peace and Love, Joan Kurtzeborn, Social Action Committee Chair
