Justice & Equity

2/19/2024

Yesterday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our month of exploration on Justice and Equity.  As our earlier reflections this month have touched on, the idea of Justice raises many different thoughts for different people, and the spiritual value of Justice calls us beyond thoughts toward practice.  To that end, Rev. Nancy shares a list of suggestions from our Social Action chair, Katherine Connor, (plus one addition requested by Rich Burdge) of ways to get involved in practicing the forms of Justice that call most strongly to you.  From protecting our environment to being active in our democracy to supporting our neighbors coping with poverty, we have many opportunities to bring our values into reality --- and to learn the spiritual lessons that reality and our neighbors have to teach us.

Why Be Spiritual? ~Rev. Aaron White

2/16/2024

Our February newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, February 2024

Yesterday morning, we shared a message from our wider UU community via video: Rev. Aaron White of the First UU Church of Dallas explored the question: "Why Be Spiritual?"  There are many ways to be spiritual, but Rev. White said that for him, they all come down to some basic questions: Do I belong in this world, and if so, where?  Does my life make a difference?  What is worthy of devoting my life and my love to it?  But once we find answers, Rev. White argued, the journey is not finished.  Knowing that we do belong and do make a difference and that it is worth devoting our lives to Love and Justice does not automatically bring our actions in line with our ideals.  As always, doing something well calls for practice, be it meditation, prayer, journaling, etc.  Through intention and practice, we can bring our spiritual ideals more fully into reality in our own lives.

Justice? ~Rev. Nancy TannerThies

2/7/2024

Our February newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, February 2024

Yesterday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us to begin our February theme: Justice and Equity.  Although the idea of Justice can seem bright and clear, a precise definition proves elusive, and what Justice asks of us in practice is open to much debate.  To that end, Rev. Nancy began by working toward a definition of Justice. Everyone present was asked to develop their own definition, which they turned in at the end of the service. A summary of those definitions is attached to this email, provided by Rev. Nancy.

Before reading the list, you might ask yourself: how would you define Justice?  As you read the list, which of our members and friends' ideas ring true to you?  Which do you have reservations about?  After reading what others offered, would you revise the definition you thought of beforehand?
