Transformation II

3/26/2024

Sunday morning, George Grimm-Howell joined us to continue our month of reflections on Transformation.

And our Fellowship is going through some transformations of our own!  Some of these have led to us having more resources to devote to social action in our community.  Our board is asking for ideas for specific existing local causes where our Fellowship can make a difference.  Please contact Rich Burdge with your suggestions.  The board will consider everyone’s ideas and present a chosen selection of them for a final vote at our Annual Business Meeting next month.

Our board itself is changing as well.  Yesterday we elected our incoming officers, who will take over at our Annual Business Meeting next month.  Our Nominating Committee proposed the following slate of candidates, who were elected by acclamation:
Logan White, president
Lisa Sanning, vice-president
Bob Antweiler, treasurer
Amanda Landrum, secretary
Samantha Porter, director of religious education
Many thanks to this year's Nominating Committee: Katherine Connor, Frank Rycyk, and Joan Kurtzeborn.  Many thanks also to outgoing president Rich Burdge.
And special thanks to our incoming board members for their service!

Sanctuary

3/18/2024

Yesterday morning, we shared a message from our wider UU community via video, entitled "Do you have the strength and courage to shelter someone in need?" by Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas.  The message is available to view online:
And as we continue our month of focus on transformation, next Sunday, March 24th during our services, we will hold our annual Election of Officers.  Our UU Principles affirm "the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large," placing the ongoing transformations of our Fellowship's leadership and path into our own hands as a sacred act.

Our Nominating Committee plans to propose the following slate of candidates:
Logan White, president
Lisa Sanning, vice-president
Bob Antweiler, treasurer
Amanda Landrum, secretary
Samantha Porter, director of religious education

Nominations will also be accepted from the floor.

Members, please plan to attend and make your voice heard!

At their meeting Sunday, the UUFJC Board formally adopted a Policy on Destructive Behavior, Violations of Behavior, and Conflict Resolution.  Our president, Rich Burdge, writes: "There are only small, technical changes from the version that was distributed for comment. We are hopeful that this policy will seldom be needed, but if it is, that it will be helpful in our continued efforts to live in fellowship together. I and the rest of the Board thank you all for your support in this effort."  If you want a copy of the policy, contact our administrator at [email protected].

This Thursday, March 21st, our friends at Jefferson City Interfaith Climate Action meet at 6:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church.  For more information, contact Rich Burdge.

An independent Insight Meditation group taught by Joe McCormack meets at our building Thursday nights at 7 pm, when possible.  Zoom may also be available.  For more information, contact Bob Antweiler.

Our March newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, March 2024

Yesterday morning, we shared a message from our wider UU community, this time from Rev. Beth Dana of the First UU Church of Dallas.  The message is available to view online:
And, perhaps appropriately for our month of focus on Transformation, we are coming into our annual pledge season.  Transformation takes more than just new visions; we need resources to make those visions real.  Everything we do is possible because of generous donations from our members and friends, and if you can give us an estimate of what you plan to give this year, it will be a great help to us as we plan, prepare, and adapt for the future.  Pledge forms are available at our building in the sanctuary, or contact our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler.

We are looking for volunteers who can substitute-teach when our Religious Educator, Samantha Porter, must occasionally be absent.  Contact Samantha if you can help.
Attention artists! UUFJC's congregational banner was irreparably damaged in the fire. We are in need of a new banner, perhaps based on the old one, or perhaps using a new design that represents our congregation and community. If you are interested in creating a new banner, contact our Art Committee chair, Patt Behler.

An independent Insight Meditation group taught by Joe McCormack meets at our building Thursday nights at 7 pm, when possible.  Zoom may also be available.  For more information, contact Bob Antweiler.

Next Sunday, March 17th, the UUFJC Board meets at our building at 3 pm.  All are welcome to attend our board meetings.  For this month’s agenda and more information, contact our president, Rich Burdge.
After the board meeting, the UUFJC Worship Team will also meet at our building next Sunday, March 17th at 4 pm.  All are welcome to get involved in creating our Sunday services, in ways big and small (and remember, we're a friendly audience!).  For more information, contact our vice president, Lisa Sanning.

Transformation I

3/4/2024

Our March newsletter is still in the works.  Digital copies will be sent to this mailing list when it is ready.

Yesterday morning, we were finally able to return to services at our building after last year's kitchen fire!  Many thanks to everyone who helped with the work day Saturday and to everyone who has supported us through our building's recovery!  We still have work to do, but it’s good to be back home.

Returning to this familiar place coincides with the start of our month of reflections on Transformation, which might sound ironic, but we're Unitarian Universalists.  As Pastor Susan Panttaja noted in the message we shared via video, the history of our faith is a journey of transformation, and one marked by faith *in* transformation.  Locally, our recovery from the fire is not just a matter of making it "like it never even happened," but envisioning what we want our space to become.  In our broader faith community, we are preparing to consider changes to the UUA's Article II, including our beloved Principles, but with our rooted faith in transformation and growth, we can consider with clear eyes.  We say (sometimes sing) that "revelation is not sealed" --- the good and sacred continuously reveal themselves, and we keep transforming our faith to meet the moment, learn, and grow.

Pastor Susan's message is available to view online:

Justice & Equity II

3/1/2024

Our March newsletter is still in the works.  Digital copies will be sent to this mailing list when it is ready

Note: we are having a work day at our building this Saturday, March 2nd, starting at 8 am, with the goal of returning to services there on Sunday, March 3rd!  The more helpers we have, the faster and easier it will be.  Tasks will be available for people of all physical abilities, so please come join us!  More information below.

Yesterday morning, ministerial candidate Sabrina Trupia joined us to wrap up our month of reflections on Justice and Equity with a powerful look at some radical visions of justice in our UU faith's roots.  For many of us, our understandings of justice draw us to work against some loud Christian voices, but the Christian faith is one of the sources of our UU faith, and Sabrina emphasized that we must not cede "Christian values" to those loud voices of today.  Christian values are also part of our heritage, and they led some of our Unitarian forebears --- as abolitionists opposing slavery --- to quite literally fight for a radical vision of justice.  Today, we can pray that such a literal fight will not be necessary, but we can hold in our hearts that our values have deep roots and are worth fighting for.

This Saturday, March 2nd starting at 8 am, we are having a work day at our building.  Our president, Rich Burdge, writes: "Construction on our building is still progressing. Kevin Landrum has completed installation of flooring in the front half of the building, as well as the front restroom vanity. Contractors have done more work painting the back half, and installed the front restroom toilet. They have still not installed lighting in the sanctuary area. We hope that they will do this this week or next, but whether they do or not, we will plan to have a workday on Saturday, March 2, with the goal of returning to services in our building on Sunday, March 3! There will be a lot to do as far as cleaning and organizing our space, but we have a plan that will allow us to make the most efficient use of our time. There will be jobs available for people of all physical abilities, so please be there at 8:00 am on the 2nd! The more people there are, the faster and easier it will go! Thanks to everyone for your support and patience during this entire process."  Contact Rich with any questions.

And coming in four weeks, on Sunday, March 24th, we will hold our annual Election of Officers.  Members, please plan to attend and cast your vote!
