UUFJC Newsletter "Flame on the Water" May 2021
Sunday morning, we were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia for online services with sabbatical minister Rev. Dr. C.W. Dawson, Jr. Today, in a powerful and at times intensely personal message, Rev. Dawson explored “The Place, Purpose and Power of Forgiveness." Many were relieved this week by the outcome of the trial for the murder of George Floyd, but punishing the convicted person does not undo the loss and grief. Often in the face of grief, we try to escape into blame and vengefulness rather than facing our pain. Rev. Dawson shared three vital points about the role of forgiveness in healing from harms done by others:
- First, forgiveness does not mean abandoning accountability or becoming willfully blind to the behavior someone is capable of.
- Second, forgiveness frees us from the burden of anger and revenge.
- And third, forgiveness allows us to stop living in the place of the hurt and move forward to build an abundant life and a better future.

"Welcoming the Word They Were Waiting to Hear Spoken," Rev. Mike Adamek
The title is a quote by George Ripley. He is speaking about the impact that Transcendentalism had in the United States. This literary and religious movement was started mostly by Unitarian clergy and laity and their desire to “welcome ... the word we are waiting to hear spoken” abides with us down through the generations. What is it about this story that draws us ever nearer so we can hear it spoken today?
