Rev. Nancy TannerThies on "Play"

7/25/2023

This morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us for the second of her two explorations of our monthly theme: "Play."

Beyond our own services, many spiritual traditions acknowledge the value of play in a spiritual life.  The "multifaith and interspiritual website" Spirituality & Practice: Resources for Spiritual Journeys features Play as one of their highlighted practices.  They write: "Play is the exuberant expression of our being. [...] It helps us live with absurdity, paradox, and mystery. It feeds our joy and wonder. It keeps our search for meaning down to earth.  Practice play by doing things on the spur of the moment. Take time out to experiment, to try on different parts, to relax. Laugh heartily at jokes, situations, and yourself. Remember, laughter heals body, mind, and soul, and by extension, communities."

Also note: lunch after our services next Sunday, July 30th, will be a potluck.  All are invited!  Please bring a dish to share.
For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from this morning is available to view online:

George Grimm-Howell on "Play"

7/22/2023

This morning, George Grimm-Howell joined us to continue exploring our July theme: "Play."

Beyond our own services, thinkers from many traditions have pointed to "Play as a Spiritual Practice."  In this blog post at Psychology Today, Bernard L. De Koven writes: "Being playful is what we do to stay in play, stay open, responsive, light, ready to engage or disengage as the moment dictates. Like playing with a puppy or small child. Kind of a reverse martial art. A peaceful art, the art of peace itself."

UUA General Assembly Sermon ~ Rev Manish Mishra-Marzetti

7/22/2023

Our July Newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, July 2023

This morning, we shared a sermon given at the Unitarian Universalist Association's recent annual General Assembly.  Rev. Manish Mishra-Marzetti addressed the question: how can we stay willing and ready to live our values, even when we are grieving and discouraged?  Our grief and anxiety can weigh us down, but they also have the potential to awaken us to the deeper truth beneath the pain of our setbacks.  For our UU tradition, that deeper truth has always been rooted in love.  Love is what Rev. Manish found that he truly wanted in a moment of grief.  Reaching out in love offers salvation, both spiritually and literally saving lives in the here and now.  And if we look at the history of our UU predecessors, we can take strength from all the times our faith has moved the arc of history toward justice with acts of courageous love.

For more on this year's UUA General Assembly, UU World Magazine offers coverage of the highlights on their website.
