July 25th, 2022

7/25/2022

Don't forget our potluck lunch next Sunday, July 31st, after services.  Those coming in person, please bring a favorite dish!

Sunday, July 24th, 2022:

This morning, we were unable to hold a normal service, but some of our members and friends nonetheless organized on our "UUFJC Cafe" email list to come together during the service hour for a time of sharing.  As a small congregation, we often find ourselves facing challenges (of numbers, tech savvy, etc.), but our desire to come together in our welcoming faith community remains beyond it all, and our will to come together despite setbacks can remind us of our monthly theme: Resilience.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/EWwD_NXbwPI

Next Sunday, July 31st:

This Friday, July 29th at 1 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Weatherization Works!"  Started in 1976, the Weatherization Assistance Program provides 8,500 jobs, services to more than 35,000 people every year, and can save households $372 or more every year, according to the Department of Energy. Local weatherization efforts through Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) look to provide those same savings to 120 homes within its service area per year. Learn what weatherization can do for your home and how to apply for program assistance from Lacey A. Williams, weatherization services specialist at CMCA.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

UUFJC Newsletter, Flame on the Water, July 2022

Sunday, July 17, 2022

This morning, our own Katherine Connor continued exploring our monthly theme of Resilience with words from our wider UU community, her own thoughts, and the thoughts of members and friends in attendance.  Katherine invited us to share resilience practices that have helped us, and answers included: getting enough sleep and exercise, meditation, creative activities, having a sense of humor, noticing the resilience of nature, gathering needed information or taking a break from stressful information sources, and staying in touch with supportive people including our UUFJC community.  Resilience, Katherine told us, is not just a solo enterprise.  Often our culture and indeed our UU theology focuses on the individual, on "you can do it," but when we need resilience it helps to remember that "you don't have to do it alone."

Note: We are currently in urgent need of donations for our free community pantry.  For more information, see below or contact Joan Kurtzeborn.

Community Events this week:

Tomorrow, Monday, July 18th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "American Identities."  The band The Who once famously asked, “Who are you?” And it is a question that Americans are increasingly asking ourselves and each other. This discussion aims to unpack the history, psychology, and practical impact of identify in America. Whether it is conservative vs. liberal, the LGBTQ+ movement, Black Lives Matter, religion, or the longstanding tension between “native” and immigrant populations, the issue of identify has always been crucial to understanding American society. Through examination of the construction and promotion of identify, we will examine how the concept has come to dominate American culture and politics. So please join us as we engage in an examination of how we view ourselves, others, and our shared identity as Americans. Dr. Darius Watson of Lincoln University will lead this program.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, July 21st at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL hosts a program on "Suicide Prevention and Gun Safety."  Sixty percent of Missouri firearm deaths are suicides. And firearms are the most lethal method of death in a suicide attempt. The Safer Homes Collaborative brings together individuals and organizations with a broad range of views on gun ownership who share a commitment to safety and preventing suicide. Kurt Dudenhoeffer, field coordinator of the Safer Homes Collaborative, will present a training session that will help gun owners prevent firearm-related injuries or death during a suicide crisis. He will explain the 11th Commandments of Gun Safety, all of which encourage putting time and distance between firearms and people in emotional crisis.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Our July theme: Resilience

7/6/2022

Our July newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter, Flame on the Water, July 2022
Our editor apologizes for the delay and deeply appreciates everyone's patience.

Sunday, July 3rd, 2022

This morning, we began our new theme for July: Resilience.  For many UUs, some of the recent rulings from our nation's Supreme Court represent wounding setbacks, and even the current celebration of our nation's founding can be painfully bound up with past injustice and present jingoism.  But our history also reminds us that we as a country have been through dark times and pursued shameful policies, and still we have renewed ourselves again and again and become a better version of ourselves, a truer reflection of our founding promises.  The arc of moral history does not bend toward justice on its own, but it remains resilient, and through the resilience and efforts of those who believe in justice, it can bend back toward that blessed shape.  (Note: This is not a summary of Rev. Mike's sermon today, although he had planned to touch on some of the same topics.)

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/b2rDCL7FLKw
