Thank you.  Yes.

11/25/2013

The weather at last has taken a sharp turn for the wintry, and the Holiday Season is upon us!  This Thursday brings the American ritual of Thanksgiving, and while it's worth thinking twice about all those Pilgrims-and-Indians images, it is always worth the deceptively challenging and vulnerable work of embracing gratitude, as Rev. Nancy reminded us Sunday morning.

The day after Thanksgiving, of course, brings us that other American ritual.  One often hears that Black Friday was named for putting retailers "in the black," but I think there's a reason such a dark-sounding name sticks to it.  In the late '90s, Adbusters magazine fought back by declaring the day after Thanksgiving "International Buy Nothing Day."  While we can respect the choices of those whose budgets demand they take advantage of discounts and those who simply enjoy the rush, it's also an opportunity to remember that we have a choice --- no matter how many commercials and sale stickers tell us we should be shopping, we can choose a day to buy nothing.

News and Events:

The December Newsletter and Calendar are finished.  Digital versions are attached to this e-mail, and paper copies are available at the Fellowship.

Thanksgiving has pushed almost everything else off the calendar this week!

The weekly Yoga sessions are still on the schedule --- but I'd check before showing up Thanksgiving Day.  Contact Jan Harcourt.

The show will go on, too, for the Last Friday Documentary Film on Friday, November 29th at 7 pm.  This month's selection is the award-winning "Searching for Sugar Man," about an American musician who became a legend in South Africa, and the South African fans who set out in search of him despite rumors of his death.  Contact Bob Boldt.

Lunch after services next Sunday, December 1st, will be a potluck, so bring your Thanksgiving leftovers --- and maybe some popcorn!  We will screen a selection from the video series "Long Strange Trip" about the history of Unitarian Universalism.  The section we will be watching is approximately one hour long and covers the history of Unitarianism in America through the 1860s --- if members are interested, we can look into getting the rest of the series, too.

Diversity, Science, and the Environment

11/18/2013

Yesterday we were visited by Prof. Cliff Cain of Westminster College, who described what he saw as the three greatest challenges facing religion in the 21st century: Religious Diversity, the interaction of Religion and Science, and Environmental Issues.  For the second week in a row we gave a warm welcome to a Christian speaker who even freethinking Unitarians could find plenty of common ground with.

This week's news and events:

Wednesday, Nov. 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, in honor of Transgender persons who have been victims of hate crime.  No local events as far as we know, just a notable date.

The Greatest of These is a Sense of Humor

11/11/2013

Yesterday we had as our guest Father George Kramer, giving us his thoughts on the accession of Pope Francis and the hopeful developments he represents for the Catholic church.  All of us have our reasons to attend Unitarian Services instead of Catholic Mass on Sunday mornings, but seeing the enthusiasm and laughter Father George brought to the room was an inspiring moment of common ground!

News and Events:

Starting yesterday and continuing through next Sunday, UUFJC is holding a book fair!  Come browse the tables in the Family Room and Library for great books on a variety of subjects, from children's books to social justice to religious resources.  (If you made a special order, it's being kept separately in the office).  Talk to Kath Connor for more information.

We also have new collection plates that were given to us by Don Love.  They came from Rwanda and Don bought them in an auction to benefit the Missouri Association for Social Welfare.  Thank you, Don, they're beautiful!

We need an Adult Forum Leader for December 29th.  Contact Laura Gilkey if you can help.

Submissions for the December Newsletter and Print Calendar are due by the end of services next Sunday, November 17th.  You can e-mail items to me or put them in the Administrator/Newsletter mailbox in the office at the Fellowship.

Trust and the Common Good

11/4/2013

November already!  Halloween candy is on clearance, and some of us are already Christmas shopping; where does the time go?  Speaking of time, did everyone get their clocks set back?  We had a very good turnout yesterday; maybe people were waking up "earlier"?

Rev. Mike brought us a message about Trust and the Common Good.  Trust is prone to vicious or virtuous cycles, and the government shutdown last month showed us our government far gone on the vicious side --- mistrust leads our leaders to become entrenched in their ideologies and treat each other like enemies, which only leads to more mistrust --- and sadly, there are no easy answers to how to turn it around.
