The day after Thanksgiving, of course, brings us that other American ritual. One often hears that Black Friday was named for putting retailers "in the black," but I think there's a reason such a dark-sounding name sticks to it. In the late '90s, Adbusters magazine fought back by declaring the day after Thanksgiving "International Buy Nothing Day." While we can respect the choices of those whose budgets demand they take advantage of discounts and those who simply enjoy the rush, it's also an opportunity to remember that we have a choice --- no matter how many commercials and sale stickers tell us we should be shopping, we can choose a day to buy nothing.
News and Events:
The December Newsletter and Calendar are finished. Digital versions are attached to this e-mail, and paper copies are available at the Fellowship.
Thanksgiving has pushed almost everything else off the calendar this week!
The weekly Yoga sessions are still on the schedule --- but I'd check before showing up Thanksgiving Day. Contact Jan Harcourt.
The show will go on, too, for the Last Friday Documentary Film on Friday, November 29th at 7 pm. This month's selection is the award-winning "Searching for Sugar Man," about an American musician who became a legend in South Africa, and the South African fans who set out in search of him despite rumors of his death. Contact Bob Boldt.
Lunch after services next Sunday, December 1st, will be a potluck, so bring your Thanksgiving leftovers --- and maybe some popcorn! We will screen a selection from the video series "Long Strange Trip" about the history of Unitarian Universalism. The section we will be watching is approximately one hour long and covers the history of Unitarianism in America through the 1860s --- if members are interested, we can look into getting the rest of the series, too.
For Yoga and even more events, see our Calendars.
