Compassion and Belonging

8/29/2022

Our September newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" September 2022

COVID UPDATE
: According to the CDC, Cole County's Covid Community Level is now High. Therefore, in accordance with our policy, masks are currently required at indoor UUFJC functions, including our Adult Forum and Worship Services, until the Covid level has lowered again.  Free masks are available.

Sunday, August 28th, 2022:

This morning, we shared a message from our wider UU community via video that connects our concluding theme for August, Compassion, with our upcoming theme for September: Belonging.  Rev. Brian Mason of the First UU Church of Wausau, Wisconsin, pointed out that belonging to a church or fellowship asks much of us, but contrary to most of our modern capitalist society, we get very little tangible return.  And yet, through upheavals and reformations, faith communities have persisted because we long for the reward of belonging itself: "We bless and are blessed by the giving and receiving of love and compassion."  Today it seems that a new upheaval and reformation is in progress; how we carry the flame of compassion and belonging through it and into the future is up to us.

The message is available to view online: https://youtu.be/zErHfxjeQCU

For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from this morning is also available to view online: https://youtu.be/wYd7kmxuLnI

"Inside and Outside of Belonging," Rev. Mike Adamek

Ask yourself, “What is the first room in a new house or apartment that I fill with stuff and why?”  Ask yourself, “Do I feel at home in the universe and if so how would I express that sense of belonging? Finally, ask yourself, “Since I am just passing through like everyone else, is my home, my sense of belonging  a communal caravan with other pilgrims (blood relations, friends, religious community) not a caravansary or is my home an internal persona which depends on no one or nothing else and it is this singularity which carries a lifelong sense of belonging to my own self on my unique journey.”

Empathy is a choice we make

8/24/2022

Sunday, August 21st, 2022

Last Sunday we shared a video service from our wider UU community.  That service is available to view online: https://youtu.be/iv1-JkgWZto

But in lieu of a summary, this week I would like to share a reading with you.  When I was searching for material on our monthly theme of compassion, this struck me powerfully, and I hope it inspires you as well:

Empathy Is a Choice We Make
By Leslie Jamison
from https://www.uua.org/worship/words/reading/empathy-choice-we-make

Empathy isn’t just something that happens to us—a meteor shower of synapses firing across the brain—it’s also a choice we make: to pay attention, to extend ourselves. It’s made of exertion, that dowdier cousin of impulse. Sometimes we care for another because we know we should or because it’s asked for, but this doesn’t make our caring hollow. The act of choosing simply means we’ve committed ourselves to a set of behaviors greater than the sum of our individual inclinations. This confession of effort chafes against the notion that empathy should always rise unbidden, that genuine means the same thing as unwilled, that intentionality is the enemy of love. But I believe in intention and I believe in work. I believe in waking up in the middle of the night and packing our bags and leaving our worse selves for our better ones.

For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from this morning is also available to view online: https://youtu.be/rYVdkz-3U4U

Our August Newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water," August 2022

Sunday, August14th, 2022:

This morning, we welcomed our Catholic neighbor Father George Kramer for our Sunday message.  During our month of focus on Compassion, many UUs can recall experiences with the less-than-compassionate side of other faiths, but most religions have a call to compassion at their heart --- as witnessed by the poster in our building showing versions of the Golden Rule (treat others as you would want to be treated) from many traditions.  However, all of us have work to do to heed that call to compassion.  Father Kramer discussed in particular the Catholic Church's history of Anti-Semitism and the many, many years of work to move the Church toward the loving spirit of Christ.  Just as being Christian is not enough, however, being UU is not enough, even if we'd like to think it is.  Today as we hear from people color, transgender people, and others, what history do we have to grapple with?  How can we move toward our faith commitment to compassion?

Theme for August: Compassion

Special news note on our Parking Lot: work has begun on our parking lot, and it is scheduled to be re-paved tomorrow, Monday, August 8th.  Please be alert for times you may need to avoid driving or parking on the lot.  Many thanks to the anonymous donors who made this much-needed work possible!

Sunday, August 6th, 2022

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our theme for August: Compassion.  If we act based on reason without compassion, we can become cruelly calculating, but if we act on compassion without reason, we can become enablers who let harmful behaviors go unchecked.  Rev. Mike explored how to balance the factors we need to act ethically.  As he said in his message title, compassion is not sufficient, but it is vital.

UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water," August 2022

Sunday, July 31st, 2022

This morning, we shared a recent service from our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia in which Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon held her periodic "Question Box Service."  Rev. Molly delivered her best off-the-cuff answers to questions ranging from a child asking why she officiated their parents' wedding to a congregant asking what happens after we die (a topic which it turns out Rev. Molly recently authored a children's book addressing).

As we at UUFJC wrap up our July theme of Resilience and prepare for our August theme of Compassion, questions big and small can be useful guides.  Continuing to question can help us keep our worldviews flexible enough to bounce back with resilience in the face of setbacks.  Questioning our knee-jerk reactions and assumptions about others can help us open space for more compassion toward them.  UUs often hold questioning as more sacred than certainty, and for good reasons: resilience, compassion, and beyond!

Rev. Molly's Q&A session is available to view online: https://youtu.be/EWwD_NXbwPI

For those who would also like to keep even more up-to-date with our neighbors at UUCC, their service message from this morning is also available to view online: https://youtu.be/L-PjeWB4ofM

"Compassion is a Vital Emotion, but not Sufficient," Rev. Mike Adamek

Phillip Hallie argues that ethics is not based solely on reason but also on the emotion of compassion.  You are likely not to be ethical if you cannot suffer with others in their calamities. Yet Adam Smith argues that "reflect that mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent, and oppose to the emotions of compassion which [you] feel for a particular person, a more enlarged compassion which [you] feel for mankind" ("Moral Sentiments", II.ii.3.7: 88-89)." When do "we choose to, in very traditional terms, listen to our heart, and when to listen to our head, and why?"

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, August 2nd, Missouri River Regional Library, in conjunction with Central Missouri Community Action, hosts the last of their scheduled summer Caring Connections events from 11:30-4:00.  People can come and get signed up for Medicaid, get eviction assistance, utility assistance, get signed up for Catholic Charities' food pantry among other things.  Contact Lisa Sanning.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Friday, August 5th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their monthly First Friday Film: "Maudie."  Maud, a bright-eyed, intelligent woman, hunched and with hands disabled by arthritis, yearns to be independent from her overly protective family. She answers an advertisement for a housekeeper by a 40-year-old bachelor, Everett, who owes nothing to anyone. She is a terrible housekeeper and spends most of her time painting. But over time, she wins his heart. When they realize people will actually buy her cards and paintings, he supports and encourages her. Maud's determination for her art, along with her partnership with Everett, blossoms into a career as a famous folk artist. Based on a true story, the film stars Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins, both of whom provide award-worthy performances.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
