UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" May 2022

Sunday, April 24th:

This morning, we virtually joined our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for a service honoring Earth Day.  To help heal the environmental damage our societal systems cause, focusing on individual choices distracts us with small-impact actions.  Even the idea of "saving the planet" can cast us as having control over the Earth when the truth is the other way around.  So what can we do?  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon called on us, through embodied experiences of connection with natural beauty, to act in community and to focus on our love for each other and the Earth all around us.  If we are going to save the planet, we must do it not as individual magnanimous masters, but as connected beings acting together within and from a wild love.

The service is now available to view online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMFvmRAN9kI

April 17, 2022

4/17/2022

Sunday, April 17th:

This morning, we celebrated our annual Flower Communion.  Members were invited to each bring a flower.  We gathered the flowers together on our chalice table, and in the end each member was invited to take a different flower than the one they had brought.  This beloved ceremony was originated by Norbert Čapek at his Unitarian church in Czechoslovakia in 1923.  Rev. Maja Čapek, Norbert's wife, brought it to the US in 1940, and it has become a Unitarian Universalist tradition.  The flowers remind us of the earth's reawakening at this time of year, and of the diverse gifts each member brings to the beautiful bouquet of our faith journey together.

On the same Sunday as we observed this gathering of our gifts, we also welcomed new members who have recently joined our fellowship community.  We are joyful to add their colors to our bouquet!

UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" April 2022

Sunday, April 10th:

This morning we continued our April theme of Awakening with a message from our wider Unitarian Universalist community via video.  Drawing on a poem by Rachel Kann, "What to Tell The Children" (https://youtu.be/BG2ZrHqlSZ0), Rev. Jim Coakley of the Green Bay Area UU Fellowship titled his message, "Tell the Children That This is the Great Awakening!"  Our nation and our forerunners in faith tradition have gone through several "Great Awakenings" when broad movements of passionate faith changed the history of churches and the history of society.  Some of those changes still inspire us, some may frustrate us, but what of today?  Can we answer the call of our times with a movement of passionate faith driving toward our values of freedom, compassion, and justice?  Rev. Coakley suggested that we can learn from the preachers of those past Great Awakenings and approach our own with repentance for past injustices, teaching truer principles, and giving ourselves and the children hope for the future.

Also please note, we have begun our annual pledge drive!  We have big plans for this year to grow our Fellowship and reach out to our community, but we can't do it without everyone's help!  Please contact our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler, with any questions or pledges: [email protected].

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Invest in Our Planet," Betty Cooper

The April Soul Matters theme, “Awakening,” reminds us to “reawaken” to Mother Earth’s rich resources. This year’s Earth Day theme is: Invest in Our Planet.  Elders and youth “awaken” us; they show us how to use our individual power to sustain the environment.  Greta Thunberg reminds us that youth are making a difference.  We will share our own and others’ ideas on making our planet sustainable.

Our Adult Forum is currently available both in-person and via Zoom.

UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" April 2022

Sunday, April 3rd:

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our theme for April, "Awakening."  Women's clubs of nineteenth-century America were an important predecessor of the feminist movements of the twentieth century. Through mutually supportive and often rigorous intellectual pursuits, these clubs not only increased their members' levels of knowledge in various areas, but the realization of their personal identity, and often the limitations of the social environments in which they lived. Despite the members of these clubs being overwhelmingly white, Protestant, middle-class women, the consciousness that they raised, especially the need for female education and political participation, had influence far beyond their immediate sphere. There is a parallel between the effect of these clubs and the UU journey of lifelong learning, and the need to be "born again", in an intellectual sense, repeatedly, both as free and independent individuals, and as a communal passage. But we must also ask ourselves if UU's share the weakness of these clubs of not welcoming new members who do not already share the group's communal history.  (Summary by Rich Burdge.)
