Renounce, Denounce, Announce

10/16/2023

Our October newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, October 2023

Yesterday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us to continue our month of reflections on Heritage with a message titled "Renounce, Denounce, Announce."

Though I did not hear the message myself, Rev. Nancy's title conjures the thought that our personal heritages do not always shape us in the way of treasured legacies, but sometimes as examples we wish to "renounce, denounce," and strike out from in search of something different.  Many of us come to our UU faith in just such a search, and our Fellowship can be a source of comfort and healing in such a case.  But let us not stop with renouncing and denouncing.  Let our healing allow us to look with clear eyes at our heritage and own any good it may have done us, as well as the parts of it we can't accept.  Let our healing give us the peace and confidence to "announce" where we've been, as well as where we've come to and where we are going.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service message from yesterday is available to view online:

UUFJC Newsletter: Flame on the Water, October 2023
Yesterday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us to begin our month of reflections on Heritage.  The word "heritage" brings to mind inheritances from the past that we treasure, but heritage is not an unchanging edifice carved in stone long ago.  Heritage is about rootedness, and also about the growth and change fed by those roots which in turn we will pass on to the future.

In that vein, Rev. Nancy talked about the proposed revisions to the Unitarian Universalist Association's Article II, which contains our UU Principles.  The Principles are a beloved inheritance of our UU tradition, but they and that tradition were always meant to keep growing and evolving.  In considering possible changes to Article II, let us be open to change, but also thoughtful and reflective about whether the proposed changes are what we need.

The UUA offers more information on the Article II revision efforts:
