Sunday morning, our own Katherine Connor led our service and shared a UUA "Braver/Wiser" reading: "Refusing the Lie" by Jude Geiger. Even in times like the current pandemic, we can feel on the one hand like we are never doing enough in our own sphere, and on the other hand like there is nothing we can do in the larger course of our society and world. The lie to be refused in all of this is so deep in our culture that it can be difficult to identify. Katherine's efforts to chase it down led her to a recent article by Fareed Zakaria, based on his new book, “Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World.” Zakaria writes that it is human agency that determines what kind of world will emerge from this crisis. The lie, Katherine concluded, was that everything will just go back to what we thought was normal. There are many things we want to recover --- hugs, get-togethers, un-hidden smiles --- but there is much we want to change, and the truth is that we can make change.
This week, we are also deeply concerned about the vandalism suffered by our neighbors at Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holts Summit. This historic church was founded 150 years ago by then-enslaved people. More information about the vandalism and the community's supportive response can be found in this story at KRCGTV.com: "Community rallies behind church that was severely damaged by vandals." The story includes information on how to donate to rebuilding efforts. You can also donate through UUFJC (see PayPal link and address below and note clearly that the donation is for Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist), and we are exploring other ways to help as a congregation. For more information, contact our president, Katherine Connor: [email protected]

"Stillness is Timelessness," Rev. Mike Adamek
Our lives are like movies that flow from moment to moment into a future always being born. Everything is in constant motion, until those moments of stillness arrive that do not freeze or stop our lives, but allows our consciousness the timelessness of clarity. We all need those moments of timeless stillness, of taking stock, of being open and receptive.
