On Sunday, October 24, we gathered to celebrate 30 years of UUFJC! Thankfully, the weather was very cooperative, and we had a good turnout at the park. In her message, Katherine Connor reflected on the history of our church as constantly evolving, as the history of human enterprise. She was able to have a unique perspective on UUFJC's history, but she surely spoke for all of us when she spoke of how the Fellowship has taught her, challenged her beliefs, enriched her life, and supported her in love. 176 people have signed the membership book since UUFJC was formed 30 years ago, and even though some of them have died or moved away, that's a lot of lives that we have touched, and that have touched ours. Looking forward, she expressed that her greatest hope for the Fellowship was that it continue with new people making changes, so that we hardly recognize anything anymore, because each day, our church is born anew. "Day of the Dead," Cristhia Castro, Executive Director, El Puente Hispanic Ministry
Castro's message about this Mexican holiday will include a temporary Day of the Dead altar in the UU Sanctuary. This altar will include photos of deceased loved ones. UUFJC members and friends are invited to participate: bring photos of loved ones who have passed away. We will provide a box for these photos near the cafe bar. They will be collected the morning of the service to be placed on the altar. You may recover your photos, which will be returned to the box, after the service. You may wish to label them. Due to Covid, there will be no fiesta as we had originally hoped. El Puente will provide prewrapped Mexican sweet rolls (conchas).

This Saturday, October 30th, we will be participating in “Walk the Vote” at Community Park from 1 -3 pm. Community members can walk along the green way, trick or treat, obtain information about voting and the upcoming November 2nd election, and learn about local organizations including UUFJC. For more information or to help with our table, contact Katherine Connor.
Next Sunday, October 31st, the UUFJC Board meets in-person at our building at 3 pm. All are welcome to attend our board meetings. For agenda and more information, contact our president, Rich Burdge.
Our building is reserved by community groups Wednesdays and Saturdays starting at 6 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 pm. If you have access to our building, please allow privacy at these times.

Tomorrow, Monday, October 25th at 6 pm, Faith Voices for Jefferson City holds its monthly assembly. This month's meeting is hybrid i.e. virtual and in-person. Did you know there is an election on November 2, 2021? There is a proposed sales tax increase to fund public safety. Join the Town Hall on Monday at the Joshua House Church 1136 E. Dunklin at 6:00 p.m. in person or online to hear from the Public Safety Commission and the community about what the tax does and what the impact will be on the public, so you can make an informed decision at the ballot box. Register for the in- person meeting and the online meeting at this link. Masks required for in-person attendees.
Also tomorrow evening, Monday, October 25th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts: "Elderhood: A Discussion and Conversation." Most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Even though humans are living longer than ever before, we've made old age into a disease, a condition to be dreaded, denigrated, neglected and denied. Harvard-trained geriatrician Louise Aronson's Pulitzer-nominated book Elderhood is the subject of a discussion and conversation that invites participants to consider how aging and ageism affects popular culture, medical treatment and societal attitudes. The discussion will be coordinated by Mary Schantz, who has long experience in public policy regarding aging issues, Dr. Nancy Ellis-Ordway, psychologist and author of Thrive at Any Weight and whose academic research focuses on body image, and Madeline Matson, the library's adult programmer. This Tuesday, October 26th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents the latest installment in the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language." Have you ever wondered why it is easier for children to learn a foreign language than adults? How can the learning of foreign languages be advantageous for students and other adults? Sometimes knowing a foreign language can be a matter of life or death, depending on the situation. The benefits of learning a foreign language pertain to careers, more cultural awareness, study abroad opportunities, meeting new people and improvement in learning skills. Gloria Williams, assistant professor at LU, will share how she learned Spanish, French, German, Swedish, English, Japanese and Patois when she lived in Sweden, Spain, Germany, Jamaica, the USA, and the impact this has had in her life and career.
