On Sunday, October 17, those who gathered at our building shared a recently recorded UUCC service in which Rev. Molly Housh Gordon spoke on "Unitarian Theology for This Moment." In the 1800s, Rev. William Ellery Channing's landmark sermon "Unitarian Christianity" defined an emerging religious movement. While many UUs today would not identify with Channing's Christian framework, many of the Unitarian qualities he highlighted still resonate:
- A rational approach to truth and spirituality
- An anti-hierarchical respect for individual conscience
- An optimistic view of human nature that sees divine potential in all
Especially in challenging times like ours, it still matters to be clear-eyed about reality, but to envision ourselves as worthy and capable of making ourselves and the world better. Although none of us fully lives up to that divine potential, seeing that spark in each other opens us up to living in relationship and basing our faith on relationship and covenant rather than dogma. We need that relationship --- we need to come together --- to move the world we see toward the beautiful future we dream of and commit to.

Community Events this week:
This Thursday, October 21st at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "How to Find an Owl in Your Neighborhood." Do you ever see or hear an owl in your neighborhood and want to experience more of these beautiful birds? Then award-winning naturalist Mark H.X. Glenshaw, aka “The Owl Man,” will be here to help. Mark has studied Great Horned Owls in Forest Park in St. Louis since 2005. He gives dozens of lectures on the owls all over Missouri and Illinois and leads scores of owl prowls in Forest Park each year. In addition to this, he helps people find owls in their neighborhoods, whether in subdivisions, city neighborhoods, rural areas, pocket parks or large public parks. His talk will show which owls you are most likely to see or hear, where to look for them, how to look for them, what to listen for, and the importance of research and collaboration. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
