This morning, we were invited to share online services with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, where Rev. Molly Housh Gordon and others explored staying grounded. In these times of grief, upheaval, and for some of us tentative glimmers of hope, we may feel like we're being flung into the stratosphere. We have learned just how long we can keep the proverbial juggling balls in the air even when we feel like we're past our limit. But if we stop, take a breath, and feel the pull of the earth on the soles of our feet, maybe we don't have to add "grounding" to our to-do list. If we can let go and surrender, we can feel the deep inescapable truth, that the earth draws us to itself and supports us, and that we are drawn to each other, to support each other. What might that feel like for you? What dream or path might need less effort and grasping, more presence and release? Listen to your body, give yourself permission to think that it might be safe, and when you feel like the time is right, for a while, let go.

Missouri River Regional Library is currently holding their "Winter Words Adult Reading Club." Challenge yourself to read more during the quiet days of the chilly season. From January 1 until March 1, read five books in any format (print, audio, electronic), and submit a form listing your titles. Forms are available at the library’s Reference Desk or online at mrrl.org (one entry per person). This year, we’re asking participants to name a favorite book from those they read last year, a book they’d recommend to a family member or friend. We’ll compile a list of these favorites and post it on the library’s website. And we’ll do random drawings for book-related prizes at the end of the program. Contact Madeline Matson. This Tuesday, January 26th at 7 pm, MRRL presents "Old-Time Radio and the Great American Songbook," a virtual program via Zoom. This audio-visual presentation examines how radio helped to give birth to the “Great American Songbook” by offering songs and singers a unique opportunity to present their songs to a national audience. The show uses both text and clips featuring some of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century as they were heard on radio—including Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and a rare 1934 performance from George Gershwin. Steve Darnall, radio historian and host of a Chicago radio show dedicated to the Golden Age of radio, will host the program. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.
