Philosophy for a Time of Crisis"

1/11/2021

Sunday, our own Frank Rycyk shared the article "Philosophy for a Time of Crisis" by Eric Weiner (Wall Street Journal, August 27th, 2020) and led a discussion afterward.  Weiner asserts that philosophy --- a rigorous exercise of reason and imagination --- can be "a practical, therapeutic medicine for the soul" in such chaotic times as we currently face.  Our unmooring from normality, even when it results from horrific events, can lead us to question our assumptions and learn toward a better future.  Philosophy's millennia-long project of finding meaning in life can help us stand strong, even in the face of grief and seeming helplessness.

Especially now, as the covid pandemic grinds on and political upheaval rocks our nation, we need tools to stay grounded and strong in our UU values.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service today is now available to view online, including a guest teacher sharing grounding techniques for the body and nerves: https://youtu.be/lgIBjHOhXeQ

Community Events this week:

Missouri River Regional Library is currently holding their "Winter Words Adult Reading Club."  Challenge yourself to read more during the quiet days of the chilly season. From January 1 until March 1, read five books in any format (print, audio, electronic), and submit a form listing your titles. Forms are available at the library’s Reference Desk or online at mrrl.org (one entry per person). This year, we’re asking participants to name a favorite book from those they read last year, a book they’d recommend to a family member or friend. We’ll compile a list of these favorites and post it on the library’s website. And we’ll do random drawings for book-related prizes at the end of the program.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Tuesday, January 12th at 7 pm, MRRL presents the latest in the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Adoption Basics."  Virtual lecture via Zoom.  If you’re thinking about adoption, know someone who has or is adopted, or is considering working in the adoption field, this presentation is for you. Andrea Reynolds, Lincoln University social work assistant professor and director of field education, will describe the different types, myths/facts, and the process for adoption.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, January 14th at 4 pm, the local chapter of the American Association of University Women holds its monthly meeting via Zoom.   A social hour will begin at 6:30 pm, presentation at 7 pm.    "Women's History through Television" is our topic for the evening.  Our presenter is Dr. Kathleen Turner Ledgerwood of Lincoln University.  Please join us for a very enjoyable evening.  AAUW promotes gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy.  Contact Charlotte Parsons at 573-893-6992 for a link to join the meeting.

Our neighbors at Vipassana Buddhist Church / Center for Buddhist Development are holding online services via Zoom at 10 am on Sundays, as well as meditation nights via Zoom at 7 pm on Thursdays.  For more information, contact [email protected].
