UUFJC April 2020 Newsletter (No print calendar this month) Bit by bit, we muddle toward a new normal and recover bits of our old normal. This morning our Adult Forum returned with a stimulating discussion about seeking positive solutions in the current crisis, and, in late-breaking news not included in the newsletter, our Forum Coordinator, Frank, is back on the job, and we hope that many of our already-scheduled Forum topics can be discussed as planned via Zoom. We were also invited again to online services with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia. UUCC minister Rev. Molly Housh Gordon shared the reading "Choose to Bless the World" by Rebecca Parker, but approached that blessing in what at first seemed a strange way. This is no time to sweep our feelings under the rug, to bottle them up to corrode or explode. Rev. Molly invited us to own the anger we feel at the present situation, to shout it out or proclaim a curse upon it --- but then, she called us to breathe deeply and realize that anger and fear are the guardians of what we love and hope for. Every "NO" we shout is in defense of a "YES" that we yearn for. Rev. Molly called us to enter that yes, enter that love, enter "an act of recognition, a confession of surprise, a grateful acknowledgment that in the midst of a broken world unspeakable beauty, grace and mystery abide" --- to enter the place where we can choose to bless our world. Next Sunday, April 5th: Adult Forum - 9:15 am "Poetry," Bob Boldt You are invited to bring a poem to read aloud to the group, whether a poem you have written yourself or a favorite poem by another author. Introduced and moderated by Bob Boldt. We are in extraordinary times, so this week's e-mail is going to be a bit different.
These extraordinary times make it ever more important to come together in community and minister each other. The following is an excerpt from a message by national Unitarian Universalist Association President, Susan Frederick Gray: "There is no script for these times. We are all learning as we go—building skills of resilience and letting compassion, connection, and ministry be our guide. "Naturally, there is a lot of anxiety and fear. Connecting across physical distance will be ever more important. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you tend to your community:
We at UUFJC are feeling our way forward and seeking new ways to come together. At the same time, we encourage our members and friends to reach out to each other by phone, e-mail, or whatever safe and responsible medium feels best for you. Also please consider the virtual gatherings listed below. We are relying on the Zoom platform, which we realize is a challenge for some. For help, you may try this short video on how to join a webinar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGbpwZNW3oI. Our president, Katherine Connor ([email protected]) will also do her best to help you. Greetings, I hope everyone is being safe. We are looking at our financial situation. Most of our costs are continuing. If you have any questions, you can contact Bob at: [email protected] A Message from our Vice President/Worship Committee Chair, Lisa Sanning:
In light of the changing situation regarding the Coronavirus/Covid-19 situation, the board has decided to suspend Sunday services in the UUFJC building indefinitely. The CDC, at this point, is recommending gatherings of no more than 10 people and is urging people to socially distance themselves to prevent the spread of the virus and to keep our hospitals and the dedicated people working there, from being overwhelmed by the pandemic. As a congregation, we will be part of the solution, not part of the problem. We are working on virtual alternatives so we can still be in community at this difficult time so look for more information to come as we develop those options for our members and friends. We can, and should, check on each other, by phone or email and reach out if we need support, (groceries/supplies delivered for those who shouldn't be out), or just a shoulder to lean on, or an ear to listen. Here are some links if you need more information: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/index.html This is a particularly helpful resource in explaining visually, (for those able to see the graphs), why social distancing is so important: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/ https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/03/17/817251610/its-time-to-get-serious-about-social-distancing-here-s-how https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/13/europe/italy-american-woman-life-under-quarantine/index.html What Italians, who are dealing with failing hospitals, horrible ethical decisions, and rationing of medical resources, would tell themselves if they could travel back in time ten days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_cImRzKXOs&feature=youtu.be Here's one more link in a handy format describing what activities are red, yellow, or green on a social distancing scale: https://www.gradyhealth.org/social-distancing/ Take care everyone and I'll be in touch soon about virtual services. Lisa This morning, after a tumultuous week in which the Coronavirus pandemic began to impact many of our lives in a new way, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us to reflect on how our monthly theme of Wisdom connects to such a time as this. Part of the wisdom we need now is to identify and speak the feelings we truly feel, the thoughts at the forefront of our mind, even when we might rather not face those things. Now is a time to reflect on what we need, and on what we can give to meet the needs of others. We are called to respect each other's need for safety in distance, but also to come together and hold each other in community.
Rev. Nancy also shared this reading: Prayer for a Pandemic by Cameron Wiggins May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those that have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips remember those who have no safe place to go May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love during this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of .... our neighbor. Blessed be, Amen. Next Sunday, March 22nd: April News Due. This morning, Dr. Cliff Cain, Harrod - C.S. Lewis Professor of Religious Studies at Westminster College, joined us to share his reflections as a Christian on his faith's history of Antisemitism. Too often, the Christian church has "complied" with anti-Jewish narratives, from Medieval blood libels to the genocidal Nazi regime to present-day conspiracy theories. However, it is important to remember the individuals and organizations who "defied" antisemitic attitudes, such as those in the World War 2 era who hid Jews or who helped them escape persecution. Today, Dr. Cain sees hope in Christian leaders reaching a new theological understanding and moving to reconcile with their Jewish brothers and sisters. He also sees hope in connections between individuals --- the more we know each other, the easier it is to defy the messages of hate.
Next Sunday, March 15th: Adult Forum - 9:15 am "CAFO Legislation," Rudy Viet State Representative Rudy Viet will share how his agricultural economics background argues for a need for confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
