On Christmas Day and the last Sunday of 2022, we took a day off from our regular services to let our members, friends, and volunteers have time for family and personal Christmas celebrations.  We did, however, open our doors for those who wished to gather informally.  Perhaps few if any people came, but we recognize that for those who would wish to come, our space can be important and sacred.

Hoping you all had a warm and happy Christmas, and wishing you the same for the coming New Year's Day.  Together we'll see what wonders 2023 will bring us!

Sunday, December 18th, 2022:

This morning, the children in our Religious Education class shared the wonder of the holiday season.  They alongside their families delivered a Christmas program filled with music, poetry and a warm-hearted story for the holiday.

The songs and stories and rituals of Christmas inspire a sense of warmth and wonder for many of us, but not everyone finds wonder in the same places.  If you are not feeling the "holiday spirit," there's no need to fret over it.  Wonders of all kinds surround us; better than stressing over wonder you don't feel is to find and embrace the wonder that speaks to you.

​Sunday, December 11th, 2022:

This morning, we shared a recent message from our wider Unitarian Universalist community, titled “A Rose in the Wintertime” and delivered at University Unitarian Church in Seattle, Washington by Victoria Poling, MDiv on December 4th.  Rev. Poling pointed to the wonder of this time in the cycle of the year, when we witness the wildness of life breaking through even in the cold and the joy of lights kindled in the darkness.  This time reminds us both of our calling and of our need for rest, that we are called to create those lights and that warmth in dark times, but also to appreciate the moments of refuge when we are supported by others, those around us now as well as ancestors and those who came before us in our faith traditions.  As UUs, we are called to kindle the chalice flame and bring light into darkness, but also to release the flame in a sacred gesture of trust and rest.

Sunday, December 4th, 2022:

This morning, we began our month of reflections on "Wonder."  The Unitarian Universalist Association lists among the Sources of Our Living Tradition "Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life".  In his message this morning, Rev. Mike Adamek explored the role of wonder in transcending ourselves.  Closing up into ourselves and our habits closes off opportunities for wonder, but through curiosity and doubt, we can experience that wonder which is both a result of and a path toward reaching out beyond ourselves.

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, December 6th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents the latest LU-MRRL Lecture: "The U.S. and the Northern Triangle: Politics and Immigration From the Cold War to the Biden Presidency."  In recent years, migration from the Northern Triangle across the U.S.-Mexico border has emerged as a flashpoint in domestic politics. Lost in pundits' and politicians’ lurid descriptions of migrant caravans, child separation, and the border “crisis” are the historical roots of U.S. relations with Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Dr. Micah Wright, assistant professor of history, will provide an overview of this history, from the Cold War to the Biden Administration, highlighting the evolution of U.S. migration law and popular opinion in the hopes of contributing to a more nuanced discussion of border security and immigration policy.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, December 8th at 7:30 pm, the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America holds its monthly online meeting.  To register or for more information, contact Alicia Erickson at [email protected].

This Friday, December 9th at 2 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "Old Books = New Money?".  Library staff are often asked whether old books have any monetary or collectible value. One of the best local sources for these questions is Annette Kolling-Buckley, owner of Columbia Books, an antiquarian bookstore now celebrating its 45th year in business. Annette is one of only three Missouri members of the prestigious Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America. She regularly does assessments for libraries and businesses throughout the state, and her appraisals are accepted for tax purposes. Next Sunday, December 11th, starting at 1:30 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL hosts a Local Authors Showcase.  Meet local authors whose works represent a variety of genres. They will meet with visitors to discuss their work and publishing experience and will have their books available for sale and signing.
