  • Our October newsletter has been delayed. Our editor appreciates everyone's patience!
  • Help spread the word! Our UUFJC Trivia Night Fundraiser will be Saturday, November 5th!  More details below, or contact Bob Antweiler.

Sunday, September 25th, 2022:

This morning, we wrapped up our month of focus on Belonging with our Water Communion, an annual ritual expressing the gathering of our Fellowship community.  Members and friends brought samples of water to add to a communal bowl, water that came from or represented significant places or experiences.  The mixing of the water symbolizes how our various gifts come together, and every year, we save part of the water for the ritual in years to come.  All the waters that were added over the years remain with us.  Everything we contributed together today and everything offered by beloved members and friends in the past remains and helps to build our community of belonging.

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, September 27th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents their Capital READ Lecture with Dr. Gary R. Kremer.  You're invited for a special presentation by this distinguished historian and author of This Place of Promise, the 2022 Capital READ. The book commemorates Missouri's bicentennial of statehood, and has received much praise from readers and reviewers. It is the product of Kremer's many years of research into the state's political and social history, written to satisfy both general and scholarly readers. Kremer is the author of 10 books dealing with aspects of Missouri history, in particular books on race, education, urban-rural divisions, and the role of government. He taught history at Lincoln University and William Woods University and currently serves as executive director of the State Historical Society of Missouri. His book will be available for sale and signing after the program.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Belonging, our theme for September

9/19/2022

Note: Next week's Sunday service is our annual Water Communion.  All are invited to bring meaningful samples of water to share in this annual ceremony; symbolic water will also be provided.

Sunday, September 18th, 2022:

This morning, as we continued our month of focus on Belonging, our own Betty Cooper shared a message highlighting the blessings and the call of our belonging to our broader society and world.  Drawing on ideas from actor/producer Jeremy Gilley and author Stephen Pinker, Betty pointed to how the positives of our human nature and our efforts -- the "better angels of our nature," in Pinker's words -- can help us come together, turn from violence toward peace, and better our society.

We also have breaking news: we are planning a Trivia Night fundraiser in October, and we want to hear your ideas!  Everyone is invited to a planning session this Tuesday, September 20th at 6 pm in our building.  See details below or contact our president, Rich Burdge.

Next Sunday, September 25th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Spreading Peace Every Day," Betty Cooper

September 21st is “The International Day of Peace.”  Now our task is to spread “peace” every day. Possibly ideas from Stephen Pinker’s book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, can be helpful. It is a tale of six trends, five inner demons, four better angels, and five historical forces that in the past decreased violence.  I am hopeful that using our “better angels” will decrease violence in our homes, schools and all societal structures.

Our Adult Forum is currently available both in-person and via Zoom.

This Tuesday, September 20th at 6 pm, we are holding a planning meeting for our upcoming Trivia Night Fundraiser.  In lieu of a rummage sale this year, the Board has decided to hold a Trivia Night at our building on October 21st or 22nd. We thought this would be a great opportunity to not only raise some funds, but also have a social event and reach out to the wider community.  But it will take a lot of planning and working together to make it a success! This Tuesday's planning meeting is meant to get the ball rolling on this project. Community Events this week:

This week, Missouri River Regional Library will hold Capital READ book discussions in their Art Gallery on Monday, September 19th at 1 pm and Thursday, September 22nd at 1 pm.  This ongoing series of discussions highlight This Place of Promise: A Historian’s Perspective on 200 Years of Missouri History, the 2022 Capital READ. The discussions will be led by community members who will focus not only on the book’s overall content but also on specific aspects of the state’s history as covered in the book.  The Monday session will be led by Claudia Young, MRRL library director, and Madeline Matson, MRRL reference and adult programmer, with a special focus on rural and urban population issues in Missouri.  The Thursday session will be led by Bob Priddy, longtime broadcast journalist and author of The Art of the Missouri Capitol: History in Canvas, Bronze, and Stone; Only the Rivers Are Peaceful: Thomas Hart Benton’s Mural; and the multi-volume Across Our Wide Missouri.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

Later on Monday, September 19th, MRRL presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Charting Gender Identity Through Language and Social Interaction."  Discussions about gender have taken on a more powerful, visible form over the last five or so years. This relatively swift change has prompted much public concern, debate, and support over the ever-evolving landscape of gender and gender identities in the 21st century. Dr. Mick B. Brewer, assistant professor of communication studies, will explain the ways gender functions as a social, linguistic, and symbolic phenomena in the new millennia. He will discuss a variety of approaches to the study of gender as a communication process, with the hope of providing the audience with conceptual resources to better understand and meaningfully engage with gender as a social, political, and cultural institution.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

September 14th, 2022

9/14/2022

Sunday, September 11th, 2022:

This morning, we shared a recently-recorded service by our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, in which they celebrated the music and legacy of "American bard and prophet" Woody Guthrie.  Through words of poetry and sounds of music that stir heart and body, Guthrie both inspired and celebrated marginalized people and struggles for justice.  Nearly 100 years later, those struggles continue, but Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon called on us not to lose heart and instead to keep singing.  Through music, or through whatever form of "song" arises from our hearts, the struggle itself can bring us together in joy and celebration.  As Rev. Molly put it, we can "keep walking that freedom highway" not only as a means to a destination, but to join in the parade of freedom and love.

Note: our lunch after service on September 18th will be at Fuji Steakhouse for a special celebration of our beloved longtime member and music/art leader Patt Behler's 95th birthday!  See below for details.*

"We, the People, Better Society," Betty Cooper

We, the people, better our society, a fact demonstrated by Jeremy Gilley, British actor and film producer and Stephen Pinker, Harvard researcher and cognitive psychologist.  Briefly Gilley's accomplishment is discussed, as are a few of Pinker’s ideas of how violence lessened.  Also, Pinker believes that less violence continues, when “we, the people, effectively use our “better angels.”

September 8th news

9/8/2022

Our September newsletter is now ready to view or download:

UUFJC Newsletter, "Flame on the Water" September 2022

Covid Update: Our county's Covid level has already receded to "Medium," and so UUFJC policy no longer calls for masks to be required.  Masks are now optional at indoor UUFJC events.  Please feel welcome to continue wearing them if you prefer; we will have free masks available.

Sunday, September 4th:

This morning, Rev. Mike Adamek began our month of focus on Belonging.  We tend to think of Belonging as a social feeling of being welcomed and understood in a group, but we can also experience an internal sense of our own belonging to the universe and ourselves.  Each of us might tend toward one or the other of these poles.  How can we treasure the kind of belonging that comes most naturally to us and also seek balance between inner and outer belonging?  (Note, this is not a summary of Rev. Mike's sermon, but based on themes he had planned to explore.)
