This morning, we shared a recently-recorded service by our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, in which they celebrated the music and legacy of "American bard and prophet" Woody Guthrie. Through words of poetry and sounds of music that stir heart and body, Guthrie both inspired and celebrated marginalized people and struggles for justice. Nearly 100 years later, those struggles continue, but Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon called on us not to lose heart and instead to keep singing. Through music, or through whatever form of "song" arises from our hearts, the struggle itself can bring us together in joy and celebration. As Rev. Molly put it, we can "keep walking that freedom highway" not only as a means to a destination, but to join in the parade of freedom and love.
Note: our lunch after service on September 18th will be at Fuji Steakhouse for a special celebration of our beloved longtime member and music/art leader Patt Behler's 95th birthday! See below for details.*

"We, the People, Better Society," Betty Cooper
We, the people, better our society, a fact demonstrated by Jeremy Gilley, British actor and film producer and Stephen Pinker, Harvard researcher and cognitive psychologist. Briefly Gilley's accomplishment is discussed, as are a few of Pinker’s ideas of how violence lessened. Also, Pinker believes that less violence continues, when “we, the people, effectively use our “better angels.”
