Sunday, September 18th, 2022:
This morning, as we continued our month of focus on Belonging, our own Betty Cooper shared a message highlighting the blessings and the call of our belonging to our broader society and world. Drawing on ideas from actor/producer Jeremy Gilley and author Stephen Pinker, Betty pointed to how the positives of our human nature and our efforts -- the "better angels of our nature," in Pinker's words -- can help us come together, turn from violence toward peace, and better our society.
We also have breaking news: we are planning a Trivia Night fundraiser in October, and we want to hear your ideas! Everyone is invited to a planning session this Tuesday, September 20th at 6 pm in our building. See details below or contact our president, Rich Burdge.
Next Sunday, September 25th:
Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Spreading Peace Every Day," Betty Cooper
September 21st is “The International Day of Peace.” Now our task is to spread “peace” every day. Possibly ideas from Stephen Pinker’s book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, can be helpful. It is a tale of six trends, five inner demons, four better angels, and five historical forces that in the past decreased violence. I am hopeful that using our “better angels” will decrease violence in our homes, schools and all societal structures.
Our Adult Forum is currently available both in-person and via Zoom.

This Tuesday, September 20th at 6 pm, we are holding a planning meeting for our upcoming Trivia Night Fundraiser. In lieu of a rummage sale this year, the Board has decided to hold a Trivia Night at our building on October 21st or 22nd. We thought this would be a great opportunity to not only raise some funds, but also have a social event and reach out to the wider community. But it will take a lot of planning and working together to make it a success! This Tuesday's planning meeting is meant to get the ball rolling on this project. Everyone is welcome to come, and bring your ideas! For more information --- or to share ideas if you can't make it to the meeting --- contact our president, Rich Burdge.
On Thursdays at 5:30 pm, Katherine Connor hosts a weekly Zoom Happy Hour for UUFJC Members and Friends to gather and check in.

Community Events this week:
This week, Missouri River Regional Library will hold Capital READ book discussions in their Art Gallery on Monday, September 19th at 1 pm and Thursday, September 22nd at 1 pm. This ongoing series of discussions highlight This Place of Promise: A Historian’s Perspective on 200 Years of Missouri History, the 2022 Capital READ. The discussions will be led by community members who will focus not only on the book’s overall content but also on specific aspects of the state’s history as covered in the book. The Monday session will be led by Claudia Young, MRRL library director, and Madeline Matson, MRRL reference and adult programmer, with a special focus on rural and urban population issues in Missouri. The Thursday session will be led by Bob Priddy, longtime broadcast journalist and author of The Art of the Missouri Capitol: History in Canvas, Bronze, and Stone; Only the Rivers Are Peaceful: Thomas Hart Benton’s Mural; and the multi-volume Across Our Wide Missouri. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
Later on Monday, September 19th, MRRL presents the latest installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Charting Gender Identity Through Language and Social Interaction." Discussions about gender have taken on a more powerful, visible form over the last five or so years. This relatively swift change has prompted much public concern, debate, and support over the ever-evolving landscape of gender and gender identities in the 21st century. Dr. Mick B. Brewer, assistant professor of communication studies, will explain the ways gender functions as a social, linguistic, and symbolic phenomena in the new millennia. He will discuss a variety of approaches to the study of gender as a communication process, with the hope of providing the audience with conceptual resources to better understand and meaningfully engage with gender as a social, political, and cultural institution. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
