This week, in a happy surprise, we were invited to join our neighbors at First Unitarian Universalist of Springfield, Missouri, for online services with a message from Rev. Michelle Scott-Huffman. On this unique pandemic-year Thanksgiving week, many of us have faced hard decisions. But in any year, Rev. Michelle reminded us, the legacy of this holiday presents us with difficult truths: about how the mythology of white settler contact with Native Americans white-washes the realities of displacement and genocide, how those very white settlers were our forebears in our own UU faith tradition, how the process of colonization continues into our own day. How can we heed the call of these truths, and what can be redeemed? We must go beyond lip-service and "virtue-signalling" and listen for the action our faith, justice, and gratitude call us to. Because the core of gratitude is still something to celebrate. Gratitude awakens us to the presence of the gifts of our world, the miracles everywhere that support our continued life, and to the opportunities we have to work for a better future. As Rev. Michelle pointed out, it is not that we "have to" do the work of justice and radical love --- it is that we get to do that work.

"Refusing the Lie," Katherine Connor
Katherine Connor will share and reflect on a reading by Jude Geiger. Excerpt: "We can’t turn back the clock to save lives, but maybe we can change our addiction to productivity that enables our leaders to fail us so tragically. Maybe we can change our habits of corporate consumption or unending growth of markets that leave small towns ruined. Maybe sustainability of markets—and our hearts and minds—is more important than the wealth of ten people on this globe."
