Rowing the Ally-Ship

UUFJC June 2020 Newsletter

This Sunday, while we did not have our own services, our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia welcomed us at their annual Youth Service.  The UUCC youth explored the concept of allyship, which takes on new importance in light of recent events.  The unjust deaths of black people and their struggle for change have many of us wondering how we, often white and privileged, can help.  The UUCC Youth led us to ground ourselves in our own experience of being helped by others, remembering what they did and what it meant to us.  They encouraged us to take on the struggle as our own, even when the going gets tough.  We must put aside our own ego, our desire to run the show or clothe ourselves in virtue.  We should go beyond standing up to be counted and really do the hard work, go beyond defensiveness to listen and learn when our mistakes are pointed out, and go beyond our desire for safety to be prepared for risk.  They emphasized that allyship is not an identity we can subscribe to --- it is not something to be, but something to do, and to keep doing through thick and thin.

Next Sunday, June 7th:

Long-Distance Democratic Process

5/24/2020

This Sunday, we held our Annual Business meeting via Zoom --- even during physical distancing, we can still honor our commitment to democratic process.

We elected our board for the coming year:
President: Katherine Connor
Vice President: Lisa Sanning
Treasurer: Bob Antweiler
Secretary: Gennifer Monteer
Director of Religious Education: Kim Connor

We also named this year's nominating committee: Tom Crane, Charlotte Parsons, and Amy Regnier.

Many thanks to everyone who has stepped up or continues to serve!

We also took the opportunity for members to share their thoughts on how to approach any return to physical gatherings, although no decisions were made.  The board will consider the matter further at their upcoming meeting on June 24th.  Feel free to contact a board member or plan to attend the board meeting if you wish to share your thoughts as well.

Staying with the In-Between

For more information, contact our President, Katherine Connor: [email protected].

This Sunday, we held services via Zoom, and Rev. Nancy TannerThies explored our monthly theme of Thresholds.  During this time of pandemic, she reflected, we are in a kind of prolonged threshold moment; we have left the way things were before, and we don't know when we'll be able to enter the way things will be after.  Rev. Nancy encouraged us to stay with this in-between time, not to shield ourselves with un-knowing but not to rush to figure it all out either.  She pointed to the "rites of passage" of many cultures, which have common elements of separation, transformation, and reincorporation.  During this separation, we can give ourselves space to transform, to foster the seeds of a future for ourselves and the underprivileged.  We can stay with this in-between time long enough to invite new growth that we can bring when we are able to reunite.

The Gaps that Water Flowers

5/10/2020

This morning we once again did not hold our own services but were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia for their online services.  Today was their annual Flower Communion (we held ours last month), and Rev. Molly Housh Gordon reflected on the service as an act of "radical hope," finding beauty and worth in all our differences and choosing to gather together.  In keeping with the theme of finding beauty in difference, Rev. Molly shared a story from India, in which a cracked water jar is ashamed of its "wasteful" leaking but then learns that it was watering flowers all along.  Not every break or spill is so benign, but in these times when so much seems to be slipping through our fingers or slipping through our cracks, we perhaps need more than ever to look beyond the flaws and messes for the flowers.

There is No Going Back

5/3/2020

This morning, we did not have our own services, but were still invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, where Rev. Molly Housh Gordon shared reflections on what might come after this pandemic.  The future will be different, she said, although we don't know how.  This is always true, but especially now.  Life as we knew it has ended.  Many of us have believed for some time that life as we knew it had to end, with its practices of environmental recklessness, racist, sexist, and economic oppression.  This virus is no gift; it is not what anyone wished for, and it tempts us all with a very natural desire to get back to normal, but maybe we should stop and be mindful first.  In the words of Sonya Renee Taylor:

"We will not go back to normal. Normal never was. Our pre-corona existence was not normal other than we normalized greed, inequity, exhaustion, depletion, extraction, disconnection, confusion, rage, hoarding, hate and lack. We should not long to return, my friends. We are being given the opportunity to stitch a new garment. One that fits all of humanity and nature."

Let us minister to ourselves and each other in our anxiety and suffering.  Let us grieve the destruction and death.  And let us accept that there is no going back, and go forward.

Next Sunday, May 10th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am

This week, we did not have our own online services, but we did have our Adult Forum, now on Zoom every Sunday, and we also had --- and continue to have --- an opportunity.  With so much of our nation and world united in protecting against the coronavirus and turning toward online services, this can be a time to explore our wider UU community.  A great place to start is with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, who have graciously invited us to join them, but we can travel further if we choose.  Today I virtually visited a loved one's UU church on the west coast.  Is there a place dear to your heart or fascinating to your mind?  Maybe a UU Church there is holding online services you can explore.  Each of these congregations is in a unique place on its collective faith journey.  If we choose to be gracious guests, we can gather perspectives to share and inspire when we are able to come back together in our own Fellowship.

Next Sunday, May 3rd:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"I Want the World to Sing With Me About Peace," Betty Cooper
The title of the forum is from Buddy Ebsen’s 1982 song. During that time period, Ebsen was a “one-man” campaign for peace. We’ll read Ebsen’s lyrics and discuss Robert Koehler’s ideas in his April 16th column..

Listless Isolation - and Possible Cures

4/19/2020

This morning, we met in a virtual service via Zoom and heard from our own Rev. Nancy TannerThies.  Rev. Nancy shared the concept of "Acedia" --- a mental or spiritual lassitude known to early Christian monks in their isolated devotions, a state that makes days stretch forever and every action feel pointless.  In our current virus-imposed isolation, we may recognize this feeling, and without adopting early Christian moralizing about it, perhaps their experiences can offer some help to us.  The cure they prescribed: "Work and Pray."  Rev. Nancy suggested taking prayer in a broader sense: taking time for quiet, for checking in with ourselves and being present with our feelings, for contemplation and for naming our gratitudes and needs.  For the "work" of the prescription, she suggested maintaining structure and routine, and also looking forward to the work that lies ahead of us beyond this situation.  A new normal will come.  What do we want it to look like?  What do we want to do in it and with it?  When the time comes, how do we want to reconnect?

Next Sunday, April 26th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
Anthony Simones
Dr. Anthony Simones will surprise us with an enlightening legal discussion of his choosing.
