“Bothered and Bewildered?”

8/17/2020

Please take our survey to help us plan how to meet during this pandemic:
UUFJC In-Person & Online Meeting Survey

This Sunday, our own Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us for a Zoom service exploring Bewilderment.  Bewilderment is a common experience in these uncommon times, indeed a universal experience in any time, though we may try to keep it hidden.  As we approach bewilderment, Rev. Nancy suggested that we first acknowledge our confusion, then allow ourselves time to wander around and around.  We feel that a stable center is there, but we can't see it, and Rev. Nancy asked that we resist the urge to hurry and leap for it, that we pay attention to what we are tempted to kick aside in our rush toward solid ground.  If we stay present in the moment and take in more of our changing reality rather than try to escape it, the center will reveal itself in its own time.

As the poet Rumi wrote:
"Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment;
Cleverness is mere opinion, bewilderment intuition."

“We advance together or each of us is diminished"

8/10/2020

This Sunday, we were happy to welcome back Rev. Mike Adamek for his first online service with us.  Rev. Mike focused on the history of Unitarian Universalist Fellowships like ours --- congregations formed by lay people coming together, not led by a professional minister.  UUs in general value individual freedom, and in Fellowships this tendency can be especially strong, sometimes to unhealthy extremes; reactive intolerance toward any form of power or guidance can keep some faith communities from moving forward.  On the other hand, Fellowships can also be places for innovation, and particularly helped paganism and feminism to take their current place in UU thought and practice.

Looking at our Fellowship in particular, Rev. Mike saw many strengths.  We have a proud 30 year history, we are involved in the wider religious community of Jefferson City, we have welcomed insights from different ministers and leaders, and we have shown a willingness to adapt.  There are still areas where we can grow --- the size of our building and parking is beginning to hold us back, for example --- and growth is nothing to fear.  Welcoming more people in creates opportunities for more warmth and intimacy, not less.  And broadening the welcome is important, because our Fellowship plays a unique and vital role in our community, a place where people can find a sense of belonging that other churches may not provide for them.

Question Box

7/12/2020

Dear UUFJC Members and Friends,

This morning, we joined our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia for a "Question Box Service."  UUs tend to celebrate questioning.  We often say that "Revelation is not sealed" --- the answers aren't all laid out for us, and they never will be.  This opens us to new truths, to the joy of discovery and the sacred pain of learning, but it is also a challenge.  Our religion is not one that offers the comfort of certainty in uncertain times like these; instead it offers a place to belong and be held as we live the questions.

In that spirit, Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon, in place of a sermon, took questions from the congregation.  In the Zoom chat, she was asked whether sometimes it's all right to be certain, and she said yes; some questions are beneath consideration, such as those that are not posed in good faith or those that call anyone's humanity into question.  The congregation, on the other hand, had submitted many vital good-faith questions, including:
How to care for ourselves and let joy in without feeling guilty,
How a young white UU can help the Black Lives Matter Movement, and
How would Rev. Molly describe UUism in one sentence (she needed a few semicolons).

The answers to all of these are "under construction," but what Rev. Molly said is available to view online: https://youtu.be/StGBSPN7yJc

Sunday, June 21st

6/27/2020

(Note: Sorry this post is late, a new webmaster is learning the ropes.  Thank you for your patience!)

Last Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies explored our monthly theme of Compassion.  Compassion, she said, goes beyond mere pity; where pity is a form of sadness bordering on despair, compassion calls us into kindness and helping.  It is, however, more difficult; true compassion requires us to come with our whole selves, including the "undesirable" parts that we tend to stuff away, out of view: our "-isms," fears, wounds, and failures.  As terrifying as it is to open those things we hide away, until we work through them with compassionate curiosity and accept them, we will find ourselves projecting them onto others and blocking our compassion for them.  When we have compassion for ourselves, then we can move into compassion for others, and in a future of thriving together.

Next Sunday, June 28th:

Grief, Rage, Love

6/8/2020

Sunday morning, we were invited to join the UU Church of Columbia for an online service focused on the grief and rage of this moment, brought on by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and a heartbreaking litany of other black lives, cut short in their developing stories and their sacred worth.  This is a moment to center ourselves in our humanity, to recognize that the grief and rage is born of love and thus recognize the depth of the black community's love.  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon reminded fellow white people (like myself) that our heartbreak is also needed, not at the center of this moment, but in support and solidarity.  White people have work to do in the silence of our hearts, to get better at loving, while also showing up for justice.

The service also included a message from black philosopher-in-residence CW Dawson, a gorgeous performance by an all-black wind ensemble, and a collection benefiting the Movement for Black Lives (whom you can donate to at any time on their website).

The entire service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/eVndyZPReus

UUFJC June 2020 Newsletter

This Sunday, while we did not have our own services, our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia welcomed us at their annual Youth Service.  The UUCC youth explored the concept of allyship, which takes on new importance in light of recent events.  The unjust deaths of black people and their struggle for change have many of us wondering how we, often white and privileged, can help.  The UUCC Youth led us to ground ourselves in our own experience of being helped by others, remembering what they did and what it meant to us.  They encouraged us to take on the struggle as our own, even when the going gets tough.  We must put aside our own ego, our desire to run the show or clothe ourselves in virtue.  We should go beyond standing up to be counted and really do the hard work, go beyond defensiveness to listen and learn when our mistakes are pointed out, and go beyond our desire for safety to be prepared for risk.  They emphasized that allyship is not an identity we can subscribe to --- it is not something to be, but something to do, and to keep doing through thick and thin.

Next Sunday, June 7th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"The Spirituality of Death and Dying," Bob Boldt
Bob will share readings from some of his studies.  Frank Rycyk and others will share their ideas.  Bring readings.  Bring ideas.

Long-Distance Democratic Process

5/24/2020

This Sunday, we held our Annual Business meeting via Zoom --- even during physical distancing, we can still honor our commitment to democratic process.

We elected our board for the coming year:
President: Katherine Connor
Vice President: Lisa Sanning
Treasurer: Bob Antweiler
Secretary: Gennifer Monteer
Director of Religious Education: Kim Connor

We also named this year's nominating committee: Tom Crane, Charlotte Parsons, and Amy Regnier.

Many thanks to everyone who has stepped up or continues to serve!

We also took the opportunity for members to share their thoughts on how to approach any return to physical gatherings, although no decisions were made.  The board will consider the matter further at their upcoming meeting on June 24th.  Feel free to contact a board member or plan to attend the board meeting if you wish to share your thoughts as well.

Staying with the In-Between

5/17/2020

This Sunday, we held services via Zoom, and Rev. Nancy TannerThies explored our monthly theme of Thresholds.  During this time of pandemic, she reflected, we are in a kind of prolonged threshold moment; we have left the way things were before, and we don't know when we'll be able to enter the way things will be after.  Rev. Nancy encouraged us to stay with this in-between time, not to shield ourselves with un-knowing but not to rush to figure it all out either.  She pointed to the "rites of passage" of many cultures, which have common elements of separation, transformation, and reincorporation.  During this separation, we can give ourselves space to transform, to foster the seeds of a future for ourselves and the underprivileged.  We can stay with this in-between time long enough to invite new growth that we can bring when we are able to reunite.
