A Gathering of the Holy

10/22/2018

This Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued our month of focus on Sanctuary, beginning with the origins of the word, from the Latin "sanctus (holy)" plus "arium (place)."  So what is it that we put in this holy place?  Maintaining such a place requires ongoing mindfulness.  Reflecting on a poem by David Whyte, Rev. Nancy suggested several attributes of the holy: it is central and carries a sense of essential meaning; it is a mystery that holds together the mix and flux of everyday living; it is a "beautiful, beckoning uncertainty," that is reached not by force of will but by stopping for reflection.
So what is it that we put in this center?  How is it that we look at history --- or, if we look honestly, at ourselves --- and find fear and hatred there?  Nancy acknowledged that Sanctuary can fill a need for protection, but she cautioned us about defining our sacred places by what we keep out lest we make exclusion itself sacred to us.  Better, she suggested, to focus on the gathering in of what is holy, what anchors us in meaning and in beautiful uncertainty.
