A Moment of Stillness

12/28/2020

Our January Newsletter is now available to view or download:
UUFJC Newsletter "Flame on the Water," January 2021

This Sunday, we did not hold UUFJC services, but as always we were invited to visit our neighboring UU congregations.

The time of year also provided us with a good opportunity to wrap up our theme for December: "Stillness."  In the year-end lull after Christmas is done, many of us feel called to take that moment of stillness and reflect on what we want to leave behind and what we want to grow into in the year ahead.  Stillness is not only a time to discern, however; we can look for ways to bring it forward with us.  If we base our resolutions on frenetic effort and exertions of willpower, often we burn out on those goals and end up frustrated, but we should not give up on intentional transformation.  As we consider what we want to nurture in our lives going forward, let us consider how we can hold those intentions in stillness as well as in action.

Our Adult RE group also wrapped up 2020 this week and looked to bringing in 2021.  RE instructor Samantha writes:

"We discussed the ideas of setting goals for ourselves, something like having a New Year’s resolution, and the importance of having a growth mindset.  Individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset.  They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset  (those who believe their talents are innate gifts).

"I challenge everyone to go into 2021 with new goals for themselves. Additionally, in setting goals ensure they are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound."

(Watch for the next Adult RE session coming Sunday, January 10th at a new time, 1:30 pm.)
