Alive, Aware, Adept

6/19/2017

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Embodiment," which she defined as bringing things into a tangible or visible form.  What do we want to make real, and how do we do it?  Rev. Nancy suggested three A's: Alive, Aware, and Adept.  Being Alive means starting from our own embodiment, our existence in our bodies and in the world; if we ignore the embodied in favor of the transcendent or draw false distinctions between mind and body, we can lose touch with what we feel and what we can do.  Being Aware is a process both embodied and intellectual; a disciplined noticing of our reality from the inside out, rather than avoiding what we don't want to notice, can help us decide where to focus and guard against ingrained snap judgments.  And being Adept means not just seeking the safe, comfortable path of least resistance, but building the skills to act in the world.

Next Sunday, June 25th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"What Was Your First Question?" Betty Cooper
An article by Courtney E. Martin helps us focus on this month's Soul Matters theme: Embodiment.

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "What Do We Personify?" Alexis Engelbrecht
Inspired by a Russian folktale in which a character learns the consequences of agreeing to take a walk with Misery, let's explore what we choose to embody in our everyday lives. To what do we devote our energies? What masks do we wear  - what qualities to we live out - throughout the day and why?
If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html
