Balancing Risk

3/6/2017

Sunday we began exploring our Soul Matters theme for March: Risk.

Rev. Mike began by reminding us that Risk is all around us, because all of our choices make a difference.  If we can never be free of risk, how can we keep it in balance?  This balance is very individual; what feels feels threatening to one person may feel safe for another --- since "safe" just means an acceptable level of risk.  But when we seek that safety, is it because it's what's best, or what's easiest?  The easy way, sticking to the familiar, brings slower but serious risks of its own.  To grow, we must take the risk of letting things go and letting in the new, whether that's growing as an individual or growing as a Fellowship.  Going through the risk and discomfort is the path to growth.  So where will you grow?  What are you willing to no longer feel safe about?

Next Sunday, March 12th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
Bob Boldt

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "Revelation: The Call and the Challenge," Alexis Engelbrecht
PLUS: UUFJC Election of Officers.
"Revelation" is a direct communication from the divine (for those who believe in the divine) - or a realization sparked by something.  Today we’ll explore the call that challenges us to be what we alone can be.  A special secret-until-that-day song that you won’t want to miss and is guaranteed to make you feel ready to face the week will be provided by Elizabeth Prenger, Angela Wells, Ted Koenig, and Alexis.

This service will end with a brief business meeting to elect our incoming board.  The proposed slate of officers will be:
President - Katherine Connor
Vice President - Jim Davis
Secretary - Lisa Sanning
Treasurer - Bob Antweiler
Director of Religious Education - Jose Villafane
Nominations will also be accepted from the floor.  If you are unable to attend and would like to designate a proxy to vote on your behalf, e-mail the administrator ([email protected]) for a proxy voting form.

If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

Plus Children's RE --- Volunteers Needed!

Face2Face Event - 1:30 pm
A special event to transform ourselves through listening to each other, to get to know each other better and make new friends!  For more information or to RSVP, contact Katherine Connor ([email protected]).

UUFJC News and Events this week:

New nametags are here!  If you do not have a new nametag, want a nametag, or want a correction to your nametag, please contact Katherine Connor.  Please also take a moment to write your preferred pronouns in the space provided; moving beyond just assuming about pronouns is an important part of our LGBT Welcoming efforts.  Thanks to Katherine for her work on the new nametags --- they look lovely!

Sunday morning announcements will be changing later this month.  Being mindful of everyone’s time and attention, we will only announce news and events for the Fellowship and affiliated organizations, and we will no longer call for more announcements from the floor.  You are still welcome to bring fliers for the bulletin board and to submit items to the administrator for inclusion in the Google calendar and weekly e-mail.  Please bear with us as we continue working to find the right balance, and talk to a member of the board for more information.

The Transgender Support Group meets this Thursday, March 9th at 7 pm.  Contact [email protected].

This Friday, March 10th at 7 pm is the monthly Reader’s Eye Film.  For film selection and more information, contact Cinthy Wilcox.

Coming Monday, March 13th at 7 pm is the monthly UUFJC Lecture Series.  This month: "Weight Stigma and Social Justice: When is Prejudice Acceptable?" presented by Nancy Ellis-Ordway.  Contact Carol Bontempo or Frank Rycyk.
