Beauty from Brokenness

5/23/2022

Sunday, May 22nd:

This morning, our own Katherine Connor shared one of the UUA's Braver/Wiser readings, Beauty from Brokenness by Paula Gribble, together with her own thoughts.  Many of us grow up thinking of Beauty as something like the Miss America pageant: a quest for perfection.  With this idea, we may see our own imperfections and brokenness as flaws to be hidden.  However, Gribble and Katherine see beauty in different ways: in the sun shining through broken clouds, in a swarm of dragonflies, in perceptive openness to the "inherent worth and dignity" and "interconnected web of existence" that exist all around us and are uplifted in our UU Principles.  Such beauty can surprise us and even, in one author's words, "throw our intentions into disarray," but we find joy as we stay open and loving toward that beauty and toward each of our imperfect and deeply beautiful selves.

Note: Due to technical problems, our service was not available via Zoom this morning.  We deeply apologize for this; we realize that some of our members and friends need this option, and we are working to fix the issues as soon as possible.  It's possible that we will need to create new Zoom links; if so, we will post them to the email list and here on our website.

If you would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, the message from their service from this morning is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/TGyPo0G1JHM

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, May 24th at 6:30 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents "En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator: An Interactive Demonstration."  The En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator is a global model that demonstrates how changes in energy, economic and public policies, such as planting  trees, changing subsidies or pricing carbon, impact greenhouse gas emissions and worldwide temperatures. This dynamic tool lets an audience see for themselves the impact policies they think will be beneficial can actually have on temperature and emissions. The interactive Simulator is a fascinating way to explore what climate interventions are needed to effectively mitigate climate change. Developed ty leading scientists at Climate Interactive and the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, E-ROADS demonstrates dynamics in energy supply, land use, transportation, carbon removal and more. Two area volunteers completed an eight-week training course in preparation to present En-ROADS in Jefferson City. Come to this program to help drive the demonstration.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, May 26th at 7:30 pm, there will be a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of the Buffalo, New York shooting and as a stand against white supremacy at Missouri Veterans Fountain behind the State Capitol.  Contact Susan Randolph.
