Mike joined us for an Easter Sunday service exploring our new monthly theme of Becoming.  In this time of year, when Nature in our part of the world is becoming lively and new after the bare silence of winter, it brings to mind the seventh Unitarian Universalist Principle: "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."  This is a transcendent commitment, calling us to become more than our individual lives and interests, to become aware, caring, and responsible, so that our world itself can become even more sustainable, just, and life-giving.

Sunday morning we were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia for their online services.  UUCC Minister Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon will soon be taking a sabbatical, and this week she reflected on the sacredness of rest.  We need rest to care for ourselves so that we can stay committed to what is important to us and return to it with new vigor, having had space for inspiration.  Rest is also part of our commitments in itself; taking rest for ourselves and demanding space for rest for others reminds us that we are committed to the inherent worth and dignity of all people, that all are worthy without having to be busy and productive.  Our commitments to justice can sometimes fill us with urgency and anger, but Rev. Molly asked, how can we go slow enough to not miss each other, slow enough for the shy soul to show up, slow enough for healing, for not leaving anyone behind?  As we emerge from the pandemic, how can we retain the slowness of our isolation and re-engage without being swept away back into the whirlwind of a busy culture?

Ken Patton was a major composer and contributor to our previous hymn book, "Hymns for the Celebration of Life." Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Commitment."  She shared information about the path communities take through crisis, from initial impact to heroic response to a downslope of disillusionment and fatigue.  It seems our community has now reached the upslope of our journey with the Covid-19 pandemic, as we make the slow climb of working through what we've experienced and building a new future.  Through this, we have stayed committed; we have remained in community and continued coming together in worship, even when that meant reinventing ourselves.  Now it is time to reinvent ourselves again.  Emerging into a new world, let alone building one, can be overwhelming after our months of isolation and putting things off, but this is what our faith calls us to do.  As we support each other through this new time of reinvention, let us hold onto the things we've learned that will serve us going forward, and let us commit once again to our covenant and principles, to working for justice and love.

Sunday we shared a nationally-streamed service from our parent organization, the Unitarian Universalist Association.  Its theme: "Loved into Being."  In the words of Zora Neale Hurston, "Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place."  Many of us have experienced this --- when we encountered someone who was committed to accepting us, authentic, hidden parts of ourselves could emerge.  We could be loved into more fully being ourselves.  And when more of us are empowered to say yes to our authentic selves and values together, we can bring forth power that can change the world.  Many have found these experiences in Unitarian Universalism; this is a crucial part of our vision, of what it means to UUs to be a "saving faith."  Our support of our UU congregation touches people in ways we will never know, and several inspired speakers including UUA President Dr. Susan Frederick-Gray encouraged us to stay committed to supporting and building our local UU community.

Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our monthly theme of Commitment.  Commitment, Rev. Mike said, calls on us to have wisdom to decide what we will commit to, will to take right action, and courage to stick with our commitment.  The discernment of what to commit to and the renewal of will and courage are ongoing processes, both for us as individuals and for our entire Unitarian Universalist faith.  Throughout our history, UUs have negotiated what commitments we make about how we relate to the transcendent and to each other.  UUism has always opposed creeds of required beliefs, and many commitments to specific concepts of the divine have been left behind, but we maintain and renew our commitment to a core of transcendence and love.

This Thursday, March 11th is the monthly meeting of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women.  Social hour is at 6:30 and meeting begins at 7:00pm.  This month's speaker, UUFJC's own Dr. Betty Cooper, will discuss Margaret Mead and her discovery about adolescent relationships.  Betty will relate it to her new book, "Family...Vital to Us and Society".  Come hear a very interesting topic about the importance of our relationships.  Betty's new book is available to you just by contacting her with a request.  For more information about AAUW's online meetings, contact Charlotte Parsons.

This Sunday, we did not hold our own UUFJC services, but as always, we were invited to join in online services with our UU neighbors.  These invitations and recent services offered by the national UU Association remind us that the Beloved Community Unitarian Universalism aspires to create is larger than any one congregation.  We at UUFJC are blessed as individuals and honored as a Fellowship that so many people have experienced Beloved Community among us specifically, but we should remember to reach further as well.  By reaching out to to form Beloved Community across distance --- and, where we can, across difference --- we can create new levels of resilience and new abilities to work toward justice.

Next Sunday, we will begin exploring our theme for March, Commitment.

After G. William Sheek published the study on family education (February 14 Forum) he researched churches; he wanted to show how religion can help create family well-being. This research was published in a book, The Word On Families: A Biblical Guide to Family Well-Being. In this forum, our group will focus on Sheek’s findings in hopes that the ideas will help create well being in our families. Also, the universal ideas can be shared with friends and families in other religious organizations.

We’ll compile a list of these favorites and post it on the library’s website. Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Beloved Community.  Rev. Nancy argued that we do not build beloved community either by relaxing into the false safety of sameness or by throwing ourselves into chaos beyond our boundaries.  Instead, we foster true community and life by "walking the edge" where if we stay present, we find newness and creativity.  This can be a tiring balancing act; it is never safe, and at times we will fall, but with practice it can be a path of joy and resilience.

To guide us, Rev. Nancy drew on the work of Valarie Kaur and her Revolutionary Love project, which offers ideas on the kinds of encounters we will have along the edge.  She suggests a practice of wonder to bring us closer to others, and a practice of tending wounds to maintain boundaries without demonizing those opposed to us in the moment.  In relating to ourselves, she uses the imagery of childbirth: developing knowledge of when to breathe, when to push forward, and when to stay with the moment of transition.

Monday, February 22nd at 7 pm, MRRL presents the latest installment of the LU/MRRL Lecture Series: "All about Cholesterol and its Cholesteric Friends," a virtual program via YouTube.  Commonly, when we talk about cholesterol, we assign it a negative connotation. However, is cholesterol such an evil compound? Get to know the cholesterol molecule, its role within our bodies and lives, and how it has helped in the development of some mind-blowing technological advances. This Thursday, February 25th at 6:30 pm, MRRL presents a virtual program via Zoom: "Food Shopping on a Budget."  Take a virtual grocery store tour to learn how to get the most nutrition while staying within your food budget. Sunday morning, we shared a service with fellow UUs across the country and across the world as the Unitarian Universalist Association streamed a special worship concluding this year's Thirty Days of Love observance.  We as UUs are often encouraged to "answer the call of Love," but perhaps we should say it "the calls of Love," because Love calls to us in many voices.  As such, the UUA service featured a variety of voices: UUs with different racial identities, gender identities, abilities, economic situations, and more.  They called us to choose love over and over again, negotiating and re-negotiating our bonds of covenant, letting go of our assumptions of who "we" are, opening ourselves to the needs of those around us, recognizing our place in the history of struggles for justice along race and other lines, and rising to create justice as an act of faith.  A common theme emerged amid the diversity of voices: answering the call of Love is not a passive act.  Love asks something more from us.

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our new monthly theme, Beloved Community.  Forming a Beloved Community presents a higher standard than for other communities.  Trust is imperative, and members must understand that others may know us better than we know ourselves.  Moral rules for Beloved Communities are more stringent than for other communities.
Love for family and friends must expand to encompass everyone.  Help offered to the community must be expanded to others not in the community.  Members must seek mutuality, not merely reciprocity.  The community must be open to others, and share in others' joys and sorrows.  Beloved Communities operate democratically.  They seek the justice and fairness for others that they seek for themselves.  Finally, beyond respecting others' property, they respect the rights of all for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

"What do today’s families need to survive and thrive?," Betty Cooper
Family educators ask: What are the needs of today’s families? Seeing the domestic violence numbers rising in our community, is it possible that family needs are not being met? Are there specific strategies that could help? The Executive Director of the National Academy for Families, G. William Sheek, in the 1980s sought to find educational strategies that helped families to thrive. His research was published in a book, A Nation for Families. As we consider some of his ideas, hopefully his findings will stimulate us to think of additional ways to “better our families and those living in our community.”

The Unitarian Universalist Association is providing a service for the last day of this year's Thirty Days of Love.  What if to "side with love" meant making bold, faith-full choices? What if it were even a little bit scary? This worship service brings together sterling worship leaders and musicians from across the country to offer hopeful, moving, challenging reminders about what we, as Unitarian Universalists, are called to do, and BE, in the world.

Missouri River Regional Library is currently holding their "Winter Words Adult Reading Club."  Challenge yourself to read more during the quiet days of the chilly season. From January 1 until March 1, read five books in any format (print, audio, electronic), and submit a form listing your titles. Forms are available at the library’s Reference Desk or online at mrrl.org (one entry per person). This year, we’re asking participants to name a favorite book from those they read last year, a book they’d recommend to a family member or friend. We’ll compile a list of these favorites and post it on the library’s website. Sunday morning we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for their Founders' Sunday, celebrating the 70th anniversary of their church's founding.  On their website they called it a time to reflect on "roots and wings" --- being grounded in the past while learning and reaching for the future.  Their service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/nTwge026lJY

"Roots and wings" is also a good image to wrap up our own month of reflection on Imagination.  Most "imaginative" people will tell you that nothing comes from nothing.  The most inventive flight of fancy still grows from the roots of what others have created and done, and yet it gives us a new experience and shows us new possibilities.  As we move forward, let us tend to the roots of our own imaginative inspirations, and also believe in the wings of joy and possibility that imagination gives us.

And, don't forget to submit any last-minute Guest At Your Table donations to support the UU Service Committee.  Donations for our Fellowship's drive are due today (see the donation link and address below and label the donation for Guest At Your Table).  You can also lend your support at any time at uusc.org.
