Staying Grounded

1/25/2021

This morning, we were invited to share online services with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, where Rev. Molly Housh Gordon and others explored staying grounded.  In these times of grief, upheaval, and for some of us tentative glimmers of hope, we may feel like we're being flung into the stratosphere.  We have learned just how long we can keep the proverbial juggling balls in the air even when we feel like we're past our limit.  But if we stop, take a breath, and feel the pull of the earth on the soles of our feet, maybe we don't have to add "grounding" to our to-do list.  If we can let go and surrender, we can feel the deep inescapable truth, that the earth draws us to itself and supports us, and that we are drawn to each other, to support each other.  What might that feel like for you?  What dream or path might need less effort and grasping, more presence and release?  Listen to your body, give yourself permission to think that it might be safe, and when you feel like the time is right, for a while, let go.

The full service is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/LQ927Bf0Ito

Next Sunday, January 31st:

The show uses both text and clips featuring some of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century as they were heard on radio—including Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, and a rare 1934 performance from George Gershwin. Steve Darnall, radio historian and host of a Chicago radio show dedicated to the Golden Age of radio, will host the program.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

"Invisible Help"

1/18/2021

Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Imagination.  She began with a quote from poet David Whyte, observing that we are always tender and in need, but that we always receive "invisible help."  In these times of threat, we can try to push away our tenderness, to seek safety by eradicating fear, but Rev. Nancy reminded us that this kind of safety-seeking fosters inequity and authoritarian thinking.  She encouraged us instead to seek safety in mutual care, to help each other and address harms with processes of accountability and healing.  That vision may seem far away, but one of our invisible helps is imagination.  We can imagine a more caring and just world and imagine steps to make that world real piece by piece.  Rev. Nancy called on us to look at what form of imagination gives each of us that inspiration and to nurture that invisible helper.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service today is now available to view online, with pulpit guest Rev. Dr. C.W. Dawson Jr. giving a message for Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday: https://youtu.be/-z1SquU0Wa0

This Thursday, January 21st at 7 pm, MRRL presents "Build Your Own Bird Sanctuary," a Webinar via Zoom.  Mitch Leachman, director of programs for the St. Louis Aububon Society and coordinator of its Bring Conservation Home program, will discuss how songbirds and hummingbirds can be attracted to small landscapes through the use of native plants that furnish insects, seeds, flowers, and fruits for birds. Specific examples of the most versatile and adaptable native woody and herbaceous plants will be included as well simple gardening practices essential for birds. The session will close with a brief review of local resources you can enlist to help on your journey.  Leabman has been gardening with native plants for 15 years and enjoys every one of the critters supported by his current inventory of 80 species of native plants. He has been active with the Audubon network for more than 25 years, and on staff with St. Louis Audubon since 2008.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

Philosophy for a Time of Crisis"

1/11/2021

Sunday, our own Frank Rycyk shared the article "Philosophy for a Time of Crisis" by Eric Weiner (Wall Street Journal, August 27th, 2020) and led a discussion afterward.  Weiner asserts that philosophy --- a rigorous exercise of reason and imagination --- can be "a practical, therapeutic medicine for the soul" in such chaotic times as we currently face.  Our unmooring from normality, even when it results from horrific events, can lead us to question our assumptions and learn toward a better future.  Philosophy's millennia-long project of finding meaning in life can help us stand strong, even in the face of grief and seeming helplessness.

Especially now, as the covid pandemic grinds on and political upheaval rocks our nation, we need tools to stay grounded and strong in our UU values.

For those who would also like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service today is now available to view online, including a guest teacher sharing grounding techniques for the body and nerves: https://youtu.be/lgIBjHOhXeQ

"Imagine That!"

1/4/2021

Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin our monthly theme of Imagination.  Imagination, Mike said, can help us gain deep insight and sympathy and show us possibilities for the future, but how do we spark imagination?  For many of us, imagination works best as it interacts with reality --- don't wait to work it all out in your head, start taking the actions you can take and set your imagination to work on what they become.  In other words, plant the seeds in reality for the fruits of imagination to grow.

At the same time, our current political reality looks like a barren wasteland to some of us, and so imagining a just, flourishing, united future can be a challenge.  Rev. Mike pointed to the power of imagination to make a difference in people's thinking as they envision different experiences and futures.  As long as people have imagination, there is hope, and imagination tells us that another world is possible.

The time of year also provided us with a good opportunity to wrap up our theme for December: "Stillness."  In the year-end lull after Christmas is done, many of us feel called to take that moment of stillness and reflect on what we want to leave behind and what we want to grow into in the year ahead.  Stillness is not only a time to discern, however; we can look for ways to bring it forward with us.  If we base our resolutions on frenetic effort and exertions of willpower, often we burn out on those goals and end up frustrated, but we should not give up on intentional transformation.  As we consider what we want to nurture in our lives going forward, let us consider how we can hold those intentions in stillness as well as in action.

Our Adult RE group also wrapped up 2020 this week and looked to bringing in 2021.  RE instructor Samantha writes:

"We discussed the ideas of setting goals for ourselves, something like having a New Year’s resolution, and the importance of having a growth mindset.  Individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset.  They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset  (those who believe their talents are innate gifts).

"I challenge everyone to go into 2021 with new goals for themselves. Additionally, in setting goals ensure they are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound."

(Watch for the next Adult RE session coming Sunday, January 10th at a new time, 1:30 pm.)

"Hibernation not Isolation"

12/21/2020

Sunday, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of Stillness.  Monday is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, a natural time for darkness, stillness, and reflection.  This year is especially challenging: many of us have an extra weariness, but also an extra restlessness after so much unseasonable isolation already.  Rev. Nancy encouraged us to think of this time not as isolation but as hibernation, the way animals see themselves through the lean times and the earth quietly nurtures the nutrients and seeds of the future.  In this stillness, especially in this challenging year, we can listen and look deep within ourselves, reflect on what is seeing us through, what is being nurtured within us.  We can listen and look to what lies outside our own stillness and comfort and how we can connect with care and build a broader peace.

Rev. Nancy suggested these seven questions for our reflection:
  • What have I been hiding from during the isolation of summer and now want to avoid as winter comes?
  • What is there about the darkness that I fear and therefore flee?
  • What new life is stirring in me that can offer strength to my whole being?
  • What is the source of inner creativity that I discover in the dark of winter’s journey?
  • Do I feel embraced by my life, my tribe and my life companions?
  • How will I embrace my community, encouraging my own growth and celebrating the growth of self and others?
  • How will we encourage our community to reach out to those we describe as "other"?

We also announced the annual Guest At Your Table drive to support the UU Service Committee in its work with grassroots activists around the world.  This year's theme: "The Meaning of Home."  More information and stories of remarkable people UUFJC supports are available at uusc.org/resources/congregations/guest-at-your-table/.  Donations may be made through UUFJC using the link or address below - please label Guest At Your Table donations clearly.  Donations may also be made at any time at uusc.org.

And to all our members and friends who celebrate it: Merry Christmas!

"Stillness is Timelessness"

12/7/2020

Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our December theme of Stillness.  Anyone who has attempted meditation or parented a toddler knows how challenging it can be for humans to be still.  This time of year, many sing of "Silent Night" and of peace, evoking a nostalgic emotional feeling of stillness.  But Rev. Mike sought to go beyond emotion into what stillness can offer our reason.  He suggested that we can focus in, increasing our sensitivity to the object of our contemplation.  Like exploring a still frame of a favorite movie, focus can bring us into a place of timeless clarity that offers new insights and engages us in new ways.

Rev. Mike also shared the seasonal short story "The Loudest Voice" by Grace Paley, in which a Jewish-American girl is drafted into her school's Christmas pageant.  If we focus to the point of timelessness on this story, what whispers to us?  How would we feel if we were surrounded by a different culture drawing our children into its customs?  How would we feel if we were those children?

"Refusing the Lie"

11/30/2020

Our December Newsletter is now ready to view or download:
UUFJC December 2020 Newsletter

Note: We are starting a text-message list to send reminders about our upcoming Zoom events to those who wish to receive them.  If you would like to be included, contact Katherine Connor: [email protected]

Sunday morning, our own Katherine Connor led our service and shared a UUA "Braver/Wiser" reading: "Refusing the Lie" by Jude Geiger.  Even in times like the current pandemic, we can feel on the one hand like we are never doing enough in our own sphere, and on the other hand like there is nothing we can do in the larger course of our society and world.  The lie to be refused in all of this is so deep in our culture that it can be difficult to identify.  Katherine's efforts to chase it down led her to a recent article by Fareed Zakaria, based on his new book, “Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World.”  Zakaria writes that it is human agency that determines what kind of world will emerge from this crisis.  The lie, Katherine concluded, was that everything will just go back to what we thought was normal.  There are many things we want to recover --- hugs, get-togethers, un-hidden smiles --- but there is much we want to change, and the truth is that we can make change.

This week, we are also deeply concerned about the vandalism suffered by our neighbors at Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holts Summit.  This historic church was founded 150 years ago by then-enslaved people.  More information about the vandalism and the community's supportive response can be found in this story at KRCGTV.com: "Community rallies behind church that was severely damaged by vandals."  The story includes information on how to donate to rebuilding efforts.  You can also donate through UUFJC (see PayPal link and address below and note clearly that the donation is for Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist), and we are exploring other ways to help as a congregation.  For more information, contact our president, Katherine Connor: [email protected]

"Stillness is Timelessness," Rev. Mike Adamek
Our lives are like movies that flow from moment to moment into a future always being born.  Everything is in constant motion, until those moments of stillness arrive that do not freeze or stop our lives, but allows our consciousness the timelessness of clarity. We all need those moments of timeless stillness, of taking stock, of being open and receptive.

This week, in a happy surprise, we were invited to join our neighbors at First Unitarian Universalist of Springfield, Missouri, for online services with a message from Rev. Michelle Scott-Huffman.  On this unique pandemic-year Thanksgiving week, many of us have faced hard decisions.  But in any year, Rev. Michelle reminded us, the legacy of this holiday presents us with difficult truths: about how the mythology of white settler contact with Native Americans white-washes the realities of displacement and genocide, how those very white settlers were our forebears in our own UU faith tradition, how the process of colonization continues into our own day.  How can we heed the call of these truths, and what can be redeemed?  We must go beyond lip-service and "virtue-signalling" and listen for the action our faith, justice, and gratitude call us to.  Because the core of gratitude is still something to celebrate.  Gratitude awakens us to the presence of the gifts of our world, the miracles everywhere that support our continued life, and to the opportunities we have to work for a better future.  As Rev. Michelle pointed out, it is not that we "have to" do the work of justice and radical love --- it is that we get to do that work.

Next Sunday,November 29th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am

"Police Training Standards," Gary Hill
Lincoln University Police Chief Gary Hill is a member of Missouri's Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Commission.  The commission is recommending racial bias and de-escalation training to be added to standard peace officer training.

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am

"Refusing the Lie," Katherine Connor
Katherine Connor will share and reflect on a reading by Jude Geiger.  Excerpt: "We can’t turn back the clock to save lives, but maybe we can change our addiction to productivity that enables our leaders to fail us so tragically. Maybe we can change our habits of corporate consumption or unending growth of markets that leave small towns ruined. Maybe sustainability of markets—and our hearts and minds—is more important than the wealth of ten people on this globe."
