Sunday, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our December theme of Stillness. Anyone who has attempted meditation or parented a toddler knows how challenging it can be for humans to be still. This time of year, many sing of "Silent Night" and of peace, evoking a nostalgic emotional feeling of stillness. But Rev. Mike sought to go beyond emotion into what stillness can offer our reason. He suggested that we can focus in, increasing our sensitivity to the object of our contemplation. Like exploring a still frame of a favorite movie, focus can bring us into a place of timeless clarity that offers new insights and engages us in new ways.
Rev. Mike also shared the seasonal short story "The Loudest Voice" by Grace Paley, in which a Jewish-American girl is drafted into her school's Christmas pageant. If we focus to the point of timelessness on this story, what whispers to us? How would we feel if we were surrounded by a different culture drawing our children into its customs? How would we feel if we were those children?

This Tuesday, December 8th at 7 pm, Missouri River Regional Library presents a virtual program via Zoom: "Understanding Addiction." No one wakes up in the morning and decides to become addicted to something. So how does it happen? Dr. James M. Smith, a licensed professional counselor, will walk through the stages of addiction, describing changes in the brain and in behaviors that contribute to addiction. This Thursday, December 10th at 6:30 pm, MRRL presents another virtual Zoom program: "Taking Care of YOU." This program will provide practical strategies to better deal with stress and life’s challenges. Topics will include: taking care of all aspects of your health—mind, body and spirit; becoming more aware of the mind-body connection, responding with thought versus reacting automatically to life’s stressors, finding ways to become a happier person, simplifying your life, and learning to live more in the moment.
