Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us with more reflections on our monthly theme of Healing.  As we find ourselves in the middle of unsettled times, even hurt and dis-ease, many of us long for healing.  Rev. Nancy suggested that the healing we wish for can take three different forms, each with its own promise and risk.  We want Cures to repair our problems, but in trying to change reality back to some idyllic state, we can miss the process of creating the new reality that could be.  We need some level of Comfort to function and move forward, but we can also seek comfort as an escape and fail to address things that are important but uncomfortable.  And finally, through Compromise, we can come together in our universal human woundedness and build a new way forward together.  A bad compromise can lead to bad feelings and mistrust on all sides, but if we see it as a place not to sacrifice our values but to prioritize our values, if we are willing to listen to the inherent humanity even of those we disagree with, we can begin to build a way forward, even in the midst of long-term challenges.

This Sunday, we were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia.  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon reflected on what has been a week of complex emotions for many UUs hoping that our nation's democratic process would come to more fully reflect our welcoming values.  Many of us feel relieved and joyful, but also remain worried and disillusioned.  Rev. Molly called us to be reminded in this moment that our liberation is connected to the liberation of all, and to learn from the marginalized among us who have long known that the struggle toward a more just and loving society is long and hard, that we cannot wait for governmental or supernatural forces to save us: "we save ourselves in community."  Rev. Molly called us to build the future not by papering over wounds still bleeding or arguing with naysayers, but by building liberation and joy and keeping open a place at that table for anyone who will join us there.

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our monthly theme of Healing.  Among Rev. Mike's readings were these lyrics from the song "Anthem" by Leonard Cohen:

“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”

The Wholeness of all of us is cracked and in the days, weeks, months and years to come the cracks in our wholeness will be where both light comes in and pours out of our lives. Healing is not being cured of whatever ails you or being saved and spending eternity in bliss. Healing is living with the damaged past and present and integrating that damage into a better future for yourself and those who love you.  It is work we all have to do.

This Sunday, we were invited to join our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia for their annual Remembrance Service.  In this time of year when Earth-based and other faith traditions call us to a special closeness with those who have passed on, we shared a virtual presentation of remembrances, as well as reflections from Rev. Molly Housh Gordon.  Rev. Molly reminded us that those we lose leave a painful, tragic absence, but also leave gifts that we carry with joy, gratitude, even humor.  The sentiment was also shared in the song "We Are" by Sweet Honey in the Rock, and in the images of falling leaves included with the remembrance images.  Like the fallen leaves of autumn, those who pass from our lives can leave us bare and desolate as winter trees for a time, but those leaves also hold and warm the roots of the living and the seeds of those still to come.  Now as we brace ourselves to face an especially difficult winter in the midst of a pandemic, Rev. Molly encouraged us to be aware of and grateful for the gifts, warmth, and resilience we've gained from the ancestors, friends, and inspiring people who have gone before.

This Tuesday, October 27th at 7 pm via Zoom, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Why the Olympics Were So Important to the Nazis: Fascism, Diplomacy, and Germany’s Role in Interwar Europe" with Dr. Bradley J. Nichols, Department of History, University of Missouri.  In the summer of 1936, the Third Reich hosted the first Olympic Games ever to be held in Germany. Three years later, the same country plunged Europe and the world into the most destructive conflict in human history. Controversial at the time, the “Nazi Olympics” thus became even more so in retrospect, compelling scholars to explain why such an inhuman regime received this honor to begin with, and how it orchestrated the event for maximum propaganda value. Less well known, are the specific goals Hitler and the Nazi hoped to achieve as a result, whether they actually accomplished those objectives, and the extent to which the affair as a whole helped the road to World War II. Dr. Nichols’ lecture will address these issues by describing the political scene in Europe on the eve of the 1936 Summer Olympics as well as gauging its reception in the public sphere afterward. By placing these dynamics in historical context, he will show how our knowledge and memory of the 14th Olympiad has been fundamentally shaped by an effort to excuse isolationism and appeasement, while simultaneously depicting the Western Allies (including the U.S.) as enemies of Hitler’s Germany from the outset.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

This Thursday, October 29th at 7 pm via Zoom, Missouri River Regional Library presents "Playing Like a Girl: Title IX and Equality for Athletes" with Dr. Ahoo Tabatabai, Department of Psychology and Sociology, Columbia College.  Title IX legislation, passed as part of the 1972 Education Amendments, helps protect against gender-based discrimination in educational programming that receives federal financial assistance. Although Title IX protects against discrimination in many different venues, it is often closely associated with athletics. Columbia College sociologist Dr. Ahoo Tabatabai will explore the important ways in which Title IX changed the athletic landscape for women and girls, while also focusing on the work that remains in ensuring that athletes are treated fairly regardless of their gender.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on Library events, visit MRRL.org.

Sunday morning, Rev. Nancy TannerThies continued exploring our monthly theme of "Deep Listening."  Many of the evils of our world arise from "agreed-upon delusions" that we go along with quietly and thoughtlessly.  The answer is not to try to be islands unto ourselves -- "reality" is always a collective endeavor.  Instead, Rev. Nancy suggested deep listening as the path from "collective delusion" to "collective knowing."  Deep listening starts with listening to ourselves and taking the risk of making ourselves heard.  When we don't listen to ourselves, we can be too reactive and defensive to listen to others.  But when we do our internal listening work, we can listen to others deeply, with compassionate curiosity.  We can move beyond the need to be right and into the embrace of learning new truths together.

Monday, October 19th, at 7 pm in their East Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents an installment of the LU-MRRL Lecture Series: "Mechanization and the Village Rice Farmer in Vietnam: A photojournalism journey" with Will Sites, Department of Humanities and Communications, Lincoln University.  Registration and masks required.  Will Sites spent three weeks covering the summer rice harvest in a small Vietnamese rice-farming village. The rapid rise of rice-farming mechanization—coupled with the massive influx of high-paying factory jobs—is eroding the culturally important role of the village rice farmer. Rice farming is typically performed on small family-owned paddy fields dotting the landscape of rural Vietnam from the Mekong Delta in the south to the Red River in the north. Modern farm machinery is replacing the need for labor at the same time new industrial complexes are hiring thousands of young workers looking for a more comfortable and profitable future beyond the fields. This Thursday, October 22nd at 7 pm, MRRL presents a program via Zoom: "The 'True' Facts about Helen Stephens: Liar and Thief" with Sharon Kinney Hanson, biographer.  Helen Stephens, one of America’s premier athletes, set records and made Missouri and America proud at the 1936 Olympics and in athletic events throughout her long and storied career. Sharon Kinney Hanson spent several years interviewing Stephens, her colleagues, coach, friends and family members, and had access to Stephens’ letters and diaries, which culminated in the authorized biography The Life of Helen Stephens: The Fulton Flash. Stephens enjoyed acclaim as the first owner and manager of a basketball team, and as a coach, mentor and role model to many female athletes. Her life was not without controversy and drama, including gender challenges, which Hanson will address in her program. This Sunday, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for a service focused on anger.  Many of us have been hurt by anger or taught to suppress it, and it is important to check in with yourself and take care of yourself in approaching it.  Still, it is a vital topic.  UU Minister Stephen Shick writes of "Useful Anger," and poet Marge Piercy writes of "A Just Anger" that, if swallowed, "clots the blood to slime."  But if we don't want to unleash harm in our moments of rage and don't want to swallow it, what to do?  Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon suggested that we should take care of our anger like we might take care of an angry child: pay attention, give it safe space, be with it, and be ready to see the hurt beneath the anger and the love that could be thus hurt.  With such care, Rev. Molly argued, anger clarifies our boundaries and reveals our power.  We don't have to choke it down; we can metabolize it into compassionate power that can bring greater justice to our world.

This Sunday, Rev Mike Adamek joined us to begin exploring our theme for October: "Deep Listening."  Mike talked about active listening - i.e. asking questions and replying so that the speaker knows they are being heard.  Then he went on to say that is not the same as deep listening, where you listen to what is not being said in addition to what is being said.  Good counselors do this by considering the context of the situation.  Mike continued with the concept of deep listening by describing listening to yourself (emptying yourself and being open),  even if you hear what you may not want to acknowledge.  Sometimes, major transitions will result.
We had a great discussion afterwards about what people are feeling during current events (anger, fear, depression, optimism for the future).

Also this Thursday, October 8th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents: "Reel Life Cinema: Olympia: Part 1-Festival of the Nations."  Registration and masks required.  Leni Riefenstahl directed and produced a two-part documentary of the 1936 Olympics, commissioned by Hitler. Considered one of the best sports films ever made as well as one of the best propaganda films, Olympia introduced film techniques still used today. The film premiered in 1938 for Hitler’s 49th birthday. Riefenstahl’s sophisticated film techniques changed the way sport was shown on screen. This Sunday, we were invited to join our neighbors at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia for a service focusing on our Universalist roots and the renewal their message offers.  Two hundred fifty years ago this week, according to UU legend, John Murray experienced a renewal of his own battered faith when he was called to preach the first Universalist sermon in the US.  At the core of our Universalist heritage is the message that no one is outside the circle of love.  Often we speak of a love that holds us and supports us, but universal love can also be an inescapable, compelling force that won't let us off the hook.  Universal love calls us to resist harm and choose connection, even in the face of risk.  At the same time, Rev. Molly Housh-Gordon pointed out, another lesson of our Universalist heritage is that we can put faith in that universal love --- in God or the Universe --- to eventually bring all people into wholeness.  We do not have to personally win over those who resist or cause harm.  Rev. Molly suggested that our energies are better spent on building the world of love we seek, having faith that that love will become irresistible, and asking ourselves again and again, "What does love require of me now?"

Imagine your favorite cup. It might be well used, not new. The cup has the ability to surround and hold a liquid. Its utility lies in both its central emptiness and its boundary to hold something until it is either empty of everything but air, or whatever it holding and the cup have mellowed into the same temperature. I accept the notion that you cannot truly accept anything which is new to you unless you are willing to empty yourself enough to be actively receptive.

Monday, September 29th at 7 pm, Missouri River Regional Library offers a virtual concert via YouTube: Music in the Library: Curtis & Loretta—When There’s Good to be Done: Songs of Unsung Heroes.  The Minneapolis-based, award-winning husband and wife duo Curtis Teague and Loretta Simonet gathered a stellar cast of characters for a collection of songs, written by Loretta, about real-life, ordinary people who overcame seemingly insurmountable challenges and came out stronger for the journey. The story-songs highlight courage, resilience, kindness and determination. There’s a rich tapestry of inspiration and riveting drama offered by the people she sought out to interview and write about: a couple who married “against the odds” in 1947, a WWII vet whose ship was sunk by kamikazes and who saved another man’s life, a woman who donated a kidney to a little girl she’s never met, a couple raising kids on the severe end of the autism spectrum, and more. Before each song, Curtin and Loretta tell how they found that person, and what led up to the challenges they faced. This Thursday, October 1st, the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is scheduled to hold its monthly meeting.  In-person meetings are currently on hold.  For online meeting information, contact Susan Randolph.

This Friday, October 2nd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their monthly First Friday Film: "The Good Liar."  Registration and Masks required.  Career con man Roy sets his sights on his latest mark, recently widowed Betty, who’s worth millions. And he means to take it all. But as the two grow closer, what should have been another simple swindle becomes a high-stakes game of cat and mouse in this suspenseful drama about the secrets people keep and the lies they live. This Sunday, our own Rev. Nancy TannerThies joined us to continue exploring our monthly theme of "Renewal."  In these times, many of us seek a renewal of the energy sapped by strange situations and unsettling news, but Rev. Nancy also led us to think about the renewal of the promises in our lives --- from the magazine subscription you might have forgotten about to ceremonies renewing wedding vows.  We must revisit these promises while respecting our own truth.  In a quote from "Self-Reliance," Ralph Waldo Emerson says it: "Henceforward I am the truth’s. ... [T}hese relations I must fill after a new and unprecedented way. I appeal from your customs.  I must be myself."  What is really important to us?  What is worth the energy and the risk?  How have our priorities changed, and what new things have we learned about what we truly need and want?  Those commitments that no longer fit, we can let go.  Those commitments that still ring true, we can re-commit to.  Both of these approaches can be ways to renew our energies, our relationships, ourselves.

Later, in the afternoon, we began a new Adult Religious Education series, led by our RE teacher Samantha Porter and based on a UUA curriculum, "Building the World We Dream Of."  Participants were left with these questions to reflect on.  Please use these questions for thought and watch our news for the next session:

1) Have you ever had a negative encounter with the police?

Take this time to reflect on an outsider experience.

1) What was the experience? Recall it in as much detail as possible.
2) What made you the person who was “different” or the “outsider”? How did others treat you as a result?
3) What was the impact of your outsider experience on how you felt about and participated in the group?
4) How did that experience shape your sense of who you are and how you behave in the world or similar settings?

This Sunday, our President, Katherine Connor, shared a reading from the Unitarian Universalist Association's Braver/Wiser resources: "Where The Action Is" by James Gertmenian.  Gertmenian writes: "Love without justice is not love. Compassion without deeds is not compassion. Faith without action is not faith. And religion without politics is not religion."  Katherine reflected on her own path and evolving views.  At one time she believed one's politics should be based only on reason, but over time realized that her own politics were also based on her UU Faith.  Indeed, if one reads the UU World magazine or strives to "affirm and promote" the seven UU Principles, strong political stances are unavoidable.  Politics is our society's way of making collective decisions --- including moral decisions.  How can faith be put aside in such a project?  One does not have to march in the streets to be a UU, but our faith calls us to build a better world; that vision cannot be achieved without politics, and just politics cannot be achieved without such a vision.

Monday, September 14th at 7 pm, Missouri River Regional Library presents "Don’t Forget Missouri Women," a virtual program via Zoom.  You know that 2020 is the 100th anniversary of female voting rights in the United States…but so much of the excitement is focused on women in the big cities that it’s easy to forget how much of that history took place right here at home. This Thursday, September 17th at 7 pm, MRRL presents "Climate Change & Your Health," a virtual program via YouTube.  Gary Leabman, a Climate Reality representative, will look at how the rapidly changing climate is affecting health and healthcare. Allergists are busier than ever, and asthma is affecting more people. Cases of COPD are on the rise. Deaths and cancer are prevalent in communities near coal-fired power plants. And these are just air-quality issues. Water and land degradation issues are plentiful. Many cases of depression and PTSD are mental health effects of this climate crisis.
