Sunday morning, Katherine Connor and Sharon Morgan led our second Anti White Supremacy Teach-In. Often we think of racism as a personal attitude, but racism and its harms are also about systems and policies that perpetuate oppression, not only in attitudes but in law and in fact. Some of these systems may not even seem to be about race, but they hurt people of color disproportionately --- as well as hurting others who are underprivileged through disability, economic class, etc.
It takes courage to stand up against these systems, but Katherine pointed to many local issues where our voices can make a big difference: school issues like unequal discipline for students and unequal hiring of teachers, limited access to public transit, unequal rates of vehicle stops by police, and more. Faith Voices for Jefferson City works on these issues and has an issue-finding session coming soon; as a member congregation we hope to send delegates --- please contact Katherine if you'd like to volunteer. Sharon pointed out that many in our Fellowship have expressed a desire to work on these issues, and she distributed a survey about where we should go from here. Jenny Smith is recently retired from the Missouri Highway Patrol Crime Lab. She will share stories about rules of evidence, the validity of forensics, and how to testify in court. Come with plenty of questions. She has previously presented about "Duct Tape as Evidence."

Please check that your information is current and let us know if you would like your information updated, added, or removed.
This year we will again be collecting pictures and artifacts of passed love ones for our Day of the Dead altar which will be erected in the corner of the Sanctuary in reverent observance from October 29 to Nov 5. Next Sunday (Oct 15) we will begin collecting your items in remembrance of loved ones. You may also bring items on October 22 and even as late as Oct 29. All loved ones will be accommodated. Your Items will be returned on Nov. 5. A box will be available at the back of the Sanctuary. Many in our fellowship look forward to this tradition that has gained widespread acceptance among many diverse ethnic and cultural groups. I know our Fellowship appreciates this opportunity to revere and memorialize their dead. It is intended to be both a memorial as well as a positive healing for those of us who have lost loved ones. This groundbreaking new National Geographic documentary goes beyond the rhetoric of the “war on coal” and is a compelling look at what’s at stake for our economy, health and climate. It addresses the complicated issues faced by an industry at a major crossroads. Co-sponsored with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, the Osage group of the Missouri Sierra Club, and the Jefferson City Audubon Society. Contact Madeline Matson.
