Does all of you feel welcome?

10/10/2016

Sunday morning, through the wonders of modern technology, we heard a sermon by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar of All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, OK.  As Unitarian Universalists, we pride ourselves on being welcoming and open-minded, but it's easy for us to unthinkingly slip into narrow norms of our own.  What if you found out that the person in the chair next to you spoke in tongues?  Would you feel uncomfortable?  Did you laugh when you read that?  Because it might not be a joke.  We are at our best and we show true hospitality when people can bring their whole selves into our Fellowship and not feel that they have to hide their deepest fears and longings or cover up pieces of their truth to fit in.

After the sermon, members and friends were invited to share what makes them feel welcome, and we heard many different answers: being greeted by name (and hearing their children greeted by name), finding things to do together, having others show interest in them and really get to know them....  What about you?

If you missed the service, Rev. Lavanhar's sermon can be viewed online as part of this video from the UUA: https://youtu.be/smFdt8cQC_Q

Question for contemplation: When has engagement with our Fellowship community taught you something new about what it means to be a hospitable person?

UUFJC News and Events this week:

The time is coming for our Fellowship's tradition of an altar honoring the dead and the October holidays.  Starting next Sunday, October 16th, you are invited to bring pictures and mementos of people special to you who have passed away (family, friends, or famous), and other decorations you would like to have considered for inclusion.  For more information, contact Bob Boldt.

We are in the process of decluttering our building, to make more breathing room for ourselves and more space to invite the new.  If you have left any items at the Fellowship that you want to reclaim or want to make sure aren't discarded, please pick them up at your earliest opportunity.

We have made an adjustment to our Joys and Concerns submission form (see the link above for the online version).  You can now grant permission for your Joys and Concerns to be shared via e-mail.  Please note the check-boxes carefully when submitting; we take your privacy very seriously and will not assume permission to share if you don't check those options.

We currently have paintings on display by our own Patt Behler.  The works are available unframed as silent auction items with a percentage offered to UUFJC’s general fund.  Please contact Patt Behler or Roberta Dunkel if you would like to place a bid.

Monday, October 9th at 7 pm is the monthly UUFJC Lecture Series.  Jenny Smith, a retired forensic chemist with the Missouri Highway Patrol, will speak on “Duct Tape as Evidence.”  See Carol Bontempo or Frank Rycyk.

The Transgender Support Group meets this Thursday, October 13th at 7 pm.

This Friday, October 14th at 7 pm is the monthly Reader’s Eye Film.  This month’s selection: “Young Frankenstein,” a hilarious Halloween favorite directed by Mel Brooks and starring the late, great Gene Wilder.

This Saturday, October 15th, the Hola Amigos Spanish Speakers’ group meets at the Fellowship.  Contact Patt Behler.

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, October 11th at 4 pm, Citizens for Peace meet at Missouri River Regional Library, upstairs in the Storyhour room.  Contact Betty Cooper.

Later Tuesday evening at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents "Vampires & Our Continued Obsession with the Undead."  Dr. Christine Elisabeth Boston, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology, will delve into the origins of the vampire myth, the reasons for its continued popularity in popular culture and media, and what we can expect next from our favorite undead creatures.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This Friday, October 14th at 7 pm there will be a special screening of the documentary "Tested" at the Baymont Inn & Suites.  This documentary shows how inequality is perpetuated in our public schools.  There is no cost for admission.  Writer-Producer-Director Curtis Chin will be at the screening, and will address the UUFJC Adult Forum the following morning (see above).  Contact Betty Cooper.

This week, Capitol City Cinema presents "Crafting a Nation" (Thursday only) and "Author: The JT LeRoy Story" (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).  For showtimes and more information, visit capitolcitycinema.org.
