At today's service, a meeting of Soul Matters Small Group was announced for next Sunday, but I have since received word that the group's meetings are on hold until further notice. To get involved with the group in the future and join in-depth discussions of our monthly themes, contact Jim Davis.

This Tuesday, January 22nd at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts Music at the Library with the Lisa Rose Jazz Duo. Saxophonist Lisa Rose and pianist Harry Beckett will perform a series of jazz standards. Lisa brings 17 years of playing in and around the local jazz and blues scene in mid-Missouri. Originally from San Francisco, she arrived in the Heartland in 1998 to teach woodwinds to students of all ages and abilities. This Thursday, January 24th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents: "An Early Environmental Challenge in Missouri: The 19th Century Timber Boom." Novelist Steve Wiegenstein’s new book, The Language of Trees, looks at the period in the late 1880s when the methods of the Industrial Revolution came to the farms and forests of Missouri, reshaping rural life permanently. He will talk about the economic and cultural changes that happened when large companies arrived in the state to harvest Missouri’s vast forests, setting off challenges to the people and the landscape that are still felt today.
