"Fuzzy" Math

8/31/2015

Yesterday, our own Don Love gave a message about ambiguity in mathematics.  We're used to ambiguities of meaning in language, but we tend to think of math as a realm of fixed meaning and precision.  However, Don pointed out that ambiguity arises even in how we count things --- especially thing that pass slowly, like years (the day before your tenth birthday, are you seriously still nine years old?).  Or zero: we can't do math without it, but math with it can get pretty weird (divide by zero and try to get your head around infinity).  Ambiguities create flaws in our "perfect" systems.  In life as in math, Don encouraged us to be aware of the flaws, to neither run from them nor gloss them over, but to pursue the ambiguities to the new insights they can offer.
