Sunday Service, November 7
Rev. Mike Adamek began exploring our monthly theme for November: "Holding History." Holding history can be a challenge for UUs as many of us are non-Christians committing to a tradition with Christian roots. Rev. Mike has experienced this as a religious humanist, but shared three waypoints of our Judeo-Christian heritage that he can still embrace:
- Covenant: Building our faith around promises that we cannot fulfill perfectly but that bring us into relationship both with the divine and with other people.
- Mystery: While ideas like the trinity may not make rational sense to all of us, they can still be understood as something like Buddhist koans, profound ideas meant to get us past our ego's need to make sense of things.
- Forebears: Earlier Christian movements like 16th-century Socinianism also emphasized reason and individual conscience, and for this they were often persecuted and denied recognition as being religion at all. When questions of religious tolerance emerge in our own day, we should remember and hold this history.
