How Media Touch our Lives

8/10/2015

Sunday, Rev. Mike talked about media theorist Marshall McLuhan and his famous phrase "The Medium Is The Message" (or the "Massage" in some editions).  This doesn't mean that the content --- the information being delivered --- is unimportant, but our lives are even more shaped by the forms the information comes in --- from planning our date nights around movie theaters to re-planning road trips on the fly with GPS-enabled smartphones.  From "horseless carriages" and "camera plays" to "mobile phones" and "Netflix-original TV series," we try to stay in our comfort zones by understanding the new through the lens of the old, but in doing so, we can blind ourselves to its true function and value.  Rev. Mike encouraged us to open our minds, take new technology on its own terms, and get the message that is the medium.

Next Sunday, August 16th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Should the Pledge of Allegiance be recited in Arabic?," Frank Rycyk
A school district in upstate New York apologized for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic after complaints from district residents.

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "Magic, Mind, and Myth," Nancy Tanner-Thies
Focusing on the question: Once we know the stories are not magic, can we reclaim the function and value of myth in life?

Plus Children's RE --- Volunteers Needed!

*Submissions for Joys and Concerns

If you have a joy or concern that you would like to be read during next Sunday's service, or if you need the caring committee to know about something taking place in your life, please go to:

http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

Note that there is a box that needs to be checked for you to give us permission to share your submission on Sunday. It helps to have submissions in by Friday at noon, but every reasonable effort will be made to include submissions made after that date and those submitted via paper and pen on Sunday morning until 10:20 A.M.

Contact Alexis with questions.

UUFJC News and Events this week:

The UUFJC Members and Friends Directory has been updated.  Reference copies are available near the phones at the Fellowship.  Electronic copies are available in the Yahoo!Group file archive or on request.  Contact Laura Gilkey if you would like your information updated, added, or removed.

Alexis Engelbrecht-Villafañe is organizing a "This I Believe" one-session writing workshop, patterned on the series of reflections you may hear on National Public Radio.  A great opportunity to explore your own beliefs, hear those of fellow members and friends, and Alexis hopes for these reflections to be the basis of an upcoming service.  If you're interested in the workshop, please contact Alexis and let her know what times work best for you.

This Thursday August 13th, Faith Voices for Jefferson City continues its Conversation on Race with a Discussion for Senior Adults at First United Methodist Church.  It begins with a luncheon at 11:30 am, then discussion starts around 12:10, facilitated by pastors Dr. Cassandra Gould and Jeannie Martin Dudenhoeffer.  If you want to attend, contact Katherine Connor so she can help the organizers get an approximate number of participants.

Later on Thursday at 7 pm, the Transgender Support Group meets at the Fellowship.  Contact Ari Morse.

This Friday, August 14th is the monthly Reader's Eye Film.  This month’s selection is “Fanny and Alexander” by the legendary director Ingmar Bergman.  Note that this film runs over 3 hours; to help accomodate this, we will start at 6:30 pm rather than the usual 7 pm time.  For more information about Reader’s Eye contact Cinthy Wilcox.

Next Sunday at 4 pm is the monthly Laughter Yoga session, free and open to all.  Contact Jan Harcourt.

And many thanks from Table of Grace for our help with their upcoming Kids Club event!  Our donations last week went a long way in buying supplies for the kids as they head back to school, and today we donated boxes of supplies on top of it.  Thanks to everyone who donated!

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, August 11th at 4 pm, Citizens for Peace meets at Missouri River Regional Library, upstairs in the Art Gallery.  Contact Betty Cooper for more information.

Later Tuesday evening at 7 pm in the Art Gallery, MRRL presents "Preserving your Digital Heritage."  Lloyd Grotjan and Aaron Reed from Full Spectrum Photo will explain how to preserve the record of your digital life—your photos, videos, and digital files—for preservation and future use. Full Spectrum Photo has been a Jefferson City art and photographic institution for more than 30 years.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This week, Capitol City Cinema presents "Dark Places" (through Thursday) and "Beyond the Brick: a Lego Brickumentary" (starting Friday).  For showtimes and more information, visit capitolcitycinema.org.
