"How We Heal"

8/10/2021

Sunday morning, we continued our monthly theme of Healing with a service featuring reflections by UUFJC members on the question of "How we Heal."  Katherine Connor talked about times when the support of others helped her heal from self-descructive anger, and how the support of UUFJC still helps her balance when to let things go and when to do something about them.  Jim Davis talked about how UUism has been a place of healing for him after his fundamentalist religious upbringing.  Both of them emphasized one point in common:  How do we heal?  Katherine and Jim said, "We heal together."

For those who would like to keep up with our neighbors at the UU Church of Columbia, their service from this morning is available to view online: https://youtu.be/XVOKA_iSM2o

Next Sunday, August 15th:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am

"Critical Race Theory," Frank Rycyk

"In his 1992 book, Faces at the Bottom of the Well, Derrick Bell used the techniques of fiction to dramatize his ideas about racism."  (Quote headlines an essay by Adam Kirsch in the Wall Street Journal, June 25th, 2021.)

All are currently welcome to attend services in person at our building.  Masks are required for everyone attending UUFJC events in-person.  Free masks will be available if you do not have one.

Also note, we are transitioning to a new audio/video system for hybrid in-person and online services, and we’ve been having some bumps along the way.  We appreciate your patience as we learn how to make the new technology work.

If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during a service, please submit it by noon on the Friday before through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html
Online services will also include an opportunity to share Joys and Concerns via text chat.

Community Events this week:

Tuesday, August 10th at 11 am, the emergency housing subgroup of the Jefferson City Homelessness Working Group holds its monthly meeting.  To get involved with this or other aspects of the homelessness working group, contact Patt Behler.

Thursday, August 12th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library hosts an Author Talk with Laura McHugh.  McHugh’s new novel, What’s Done in Darkness, is a psychological thriller about a teenager’s abduction from her family’s farm. She is found after weeks but is considered tainted by her deeply religious family. She later moves to St. Louis and tries to put the past behind her until a detective wants her help with a case similar to hers. She then must untangle the truth of what really happened to her. Critics have praised McHugh’s novels for their unique characters, intriguing plots, and sense of place. She received an International Thriller Writers Award for her first book, The Weight of Blood, which was the library’s 2014 Capital READ.  Contact Madeline Matson.  For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
