"Humanity is the Best, Humanity is the Worst"

8/2/2021

Sunday morning, we shared a message from our wider UU Community, delivered by Rev. Thom Belote at The Community Church of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist last month.  Rev. Thom opened with stories of runners in races who gave up victory to help other racers, even opponents, who had fallen or were in distress.  Stories like this remind us of humanity's best, but it is all too easy to recall examples of humanity at its worst as well.  So what are we to make of ourselves?  Theologians have offered various answers over the centuries --- that humans are fallen and immoral and society should restrain us, that humans are malleable and society should seek to shape us for the best, that individual humans tend to be good but that social groups can corrupt us.  More recently, liberation movements like Black Lives Matter, Feminism, Queer Liberation etc. argue that we are responsible for both our private and collective lives, and that we should struggle together to transform the worst of our humanity toward the best of our humanity.  Like the runners who put kindness before victory, we can look at the rules we have been given and choose to put our higher principles above personal goals and victory over others.  Rev. Thom reminded us that we can and should choose to run a different race.

The full service where Rev. Belote originally gave this sermon is available to view online (sermon begins at 27:30): https://youtu.be/eO9OMGLu8aY?t=1650
