Last Sunday we were invited to share the online services of our neighbor congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia. In her sermon, Rev. Molly Housh Gordon pointed out that we are in an in-between time. In the cycle of the year, the past week saw the harvest moon and the autumnal equinox. In the covid pandemic, we are seemingly between the worst of it and the end. In current events, we are between the disruption and the resolution. Our brains hate this in-between-ness and crave clarity and predictability. At the same time, our spirits may be drawn to the possibility of such moments, and our bodies might be just plain tired. Rev. Molly offered some suggestions for navigating such times:
- We can anchor ourselves in our bodies and senses, being present to the moment.
- We can offer our brains small rituals, expectations that can be realized.
- We can build a safe, cozy physical space where we can go to recharge.
- We can tune in to the natural rhythms of the world around us.
- And we can tune in to the little moments of in-between-ness. As we step through any doorway, we can take a breath and look at the possibilities of the new space we're entering.
The sermon is now available to view online: https://youtu.be/sarN3I1aVzo
As if to underscore the point of navigating in-between times of change, those who gathered at our own building had technical difficulties and weren't able to watch the sermon this morning, but they made the best of it, singing hymns and enjoying fellowship as members of our faith community. In staying with the moment and honoring the ritual in whatever form in the familiar space, perhaps we see synchronicity --- Rev. Molly's advice coming in useful even when it wasn't heard.

Community Events this week:
This Thursday, September 30th at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, Missouri River Regional Library presents a Capital READ Author Talk with Allen Eskens. Registration required. Eskens is the author of five critically acclaimed and award-winning novels. In 1991, he began writing Nothing More Dangerous as a way to explore his feelings about prejudice and racism, working sporadically on the story during the intervening years. He published the book--his sixth--last year to high praise from both national and local publications. Nothing More Dangerous is different from his previous works; it's a story set in the Missouri Ozarks in the 1970s with a focus on family, loyalty, friendship, and simmering racial tension. Reviewers have called the book "a stunning small-town mystery": (New York Times Book Review) and "a coming-of-age book to rival some of the best..." (Library Journal, starred review). A mid-Missouri native, Eskens is a retired criminal defense lawyer who lives in Minnesota. After his presentation, Eskens will sign books and meet with local fans and appreciative readers. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
This Friday, October 1st at 7 pm in their Art Gallery, MRRL presents their monthly First Friday Film. This month's selection: "The Courier." In this true-life Cold War spy thriller, a British businessman, Greville Wynne, becomes entangled in one of the greatest international conflicts in history. Recruited by MI6 and a CIA operative, Wynne forms a covert alliance with a Soviet spy, and both men risk everything in a dangerous race against time to provide the intelligence needed to prevent nuclear confrontation and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Brosnahan. Contact Madeline Matson. For more on library events, visit MRRL.org.
