In Too Deep

4/4/2016

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike shared important information about abusive relationships.  From the outside, it can be hard to tell when a relationship is unhealthy.  From the outside it can be easy to think someone should get out, but in the intimacy of lived experience, shock or fear or desire for connection can make it much more difficult.  In these ground-level situations it can take great discernment and courage to stand up for your inherent worth and dignity --- or for someone else's.  Rev. Mike shared some of the warning signs --- when someone tries to cut off a partner from family and friends, when someone has problems in a relationship and doesn't feel safe talking to their partner about them, and many more --- and Rev. Mike shared these resources for information and help:
  • One Love MyPlan App (in the app store: http://bit.ly/1bJsRll)
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-SAFE)
  • Love Is Respect (www.LoveIsRespect.org, 1-866-331-9474 or 1-866-331-8453, text "loveis" to 22522)
  • National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800-656-HOPE)
  • Helpline (www.stopitnow.org/help-inquiry, 1-888-PREVENT)
  • Center for Relationship Abuse Awareness (stoprelationshipabuse.org/get-help/resources)

UUFJC News and Events this week:

Our annual pledge drive continues!  Contact our Treasurer, Bob Antweiler.  Thank you to everyone who pledges; this is a big help to us as we plan for the year ahead.

We are also coming up on the Fellowship’s 25th Anniversary this May!  We would like to celebrate with a special event, but we need people to plan it and make it happen!  Bob Antweiler will not be leading the effort, but he’s agreed to be a contact to start coordinating people, so contact him if you want to get involved.

Lisa Sanning has volunteered to organize our annual Rummage Sale!  She is currently working on selecting a date and would like your input.  When the time comes, we will need lots of volunteers for the sale, so stay posted, and many thanks to Lisa for taking the lead!

We need an Adult Forum leader for April 24th.  See Laura Gilkey.

Alexis Engelbrecht is going to be reading Fluent in Faith: A Unitarian Universalist Embrace of Religious Language by Jeanne Harrison Niuwejaar (available at uuabookstore.org).  She would be happy for others to join her in reading and discussing the book; contact Alexis for more information.

This Friday, April 8th at 7 pm is the monthly Reader’s Eye Film.  Contact Cinthy Wilcox.

This Saturday, April 9th, the UU Church of Columbia hosts an anti-racism workshop with activist and educator Chris Crass.  The workshop is from 10 am - 2 pm.  Registration is required.  Contact the UU Church of Columbia for information.
