John Dietrich: A Unitarian Transformation

4/3/2017

Sunday morning, Rev. Mike began exploring our April Soul Matters theme of Transformation with the story of a great Unitarian minister, John Dietrich.  Deitrich's theology transformed thoughout his life, leading him to become a pioneering Humanist who believed that the focus of faith should be on the development of humanity.  The credo he was writing at the time of his death shows that his thoughts had transformed again in a more theist direction, but he still spoke of the need to look past our metaphorical ideas of god to the common spiritual ground that could bring humanity into unity and peace.  Dietrich exemplified the Unitarian Universalist value of a free and responsible search for truth and meaning as he kept searching all the way to the end of his life, never seeing his own theology as perfect and complete, and he showed Humanism as an approach to the sacred.
