Justice with Vision

7/27/2014

Today, our own Betty Cooper traced for us the idea of justice, from Plato's justice in ancient Greece to today's movement toward Restorative Justice.  How can we acknowledge harms done and obligations owed while moving both victim and offender toward wholeness in a healed community?

UUFJC News and Events this week:

The August Newsletter and print calendar are ready.  Paper copies are at the Fellowship, and electronic copies are available.

The Art Committee is considering purchasing some posters for display at the Fellowship.  Visit https://www.syracuseculturalworkers.com/ or see Patt Behler to browse the print catalog of one place we're thinking of shopping for them.  Contact a member of the Art Committee if you have more ideas.

This Thursday, July 31st at 7 pm, a new Pagan Discussion Group will hold its first meeting at the Fellowship.  Contact Kurt Groner for more information.

First Friday Socials are back, starting this Friday, August 1st at 5 pm.  Come for an evening of casual fun.  You can bring refreshments for yourself or to share, enjoy our deck and grill out back, or just enjoy the air conditioning. Contact Kath Connor.

For next Sunday's service, August 3rd:
Alison Anderson will lead the Adult Forum in a discussion of ballot Amendment 1 and what's wrong with "Right to Farm"; be sure to catch it before heading to the polls August 5th.
Rev. Nancy Tanner-Thies will deliver a message entitled "Verdant, Chaotic Green."
Roger Tanner-Thies will be teaching Children's RE.  An aide is still needed, so contact Barb Koenig if you can help.

Community Events this week:

This Thursday, July 31st at 7 pm, Richard Parsons will host the Recorder musicians' group at his house.  Beginners are welcome.  More information on the bulletin board at the Fellowship, or contact Richard.

At the same time, Thursday, July 31st at 7 pm, Missouri River Regional Library hosts Ruth Wallace and Carrie Schulte, environmental specialists with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, to discuss how rain barrels with rain gardens can beautify your community, help solve flash flooding problems and prevent water pollution of your nearby waterway.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This Friday, August 1st at 7 pm, MRRL presents their First Friday Film, "The Iran Job."  When American basketball player Kevin Sheppard accepts a job to play in one of the world's most feared countries--Iran--he expects the worse. But what he finds if a country brimming with generosity, acceptance, and sensuality. He forms an unlikely friendship with three outspoken Iranian women, who share with him their strong opinions on politics, religion and gender roles. His season in Iran culminates in something much bigger than basketball: the uprising and subsequent suppression of Iran's reformist Green Movement.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This week, Capitol City Cinema on High Street presents "NOW: In the Wings on a World Stage" at various showtimes, Wednesday, July 30th through Sunday, August 3rd.  Visit http://www.capitolcitycinema.org/ for more information.
