King or Kin?

2/8/2015

Today, friend of the Fellowship Dr. Cliff Cain returned to deliver the message for our annual Evolution Sunday, exploring the impact Darwin's theory has had on many worldviews shaped by Christianity.  For someone who believed the story in Genesis, Chapter 1, that humans were created special and apart "in the image of God" and given the earth to "fill" and "subdue," the idea that we were a part of the animal world could be a shock.  But the Bible contains a second creation story in Genesis, Chapter 2, where the first human was created from the dust like any other animal and given the charge to tend and protect the garden.  In light of this second account and the realities science shows us, Rev. Cain sees "the image of God" --- or for non-Christians, the unique condition of humanity --- not as a dominion but as a responsibility to care for the whole of life: not kingship, but kinship.

We also took up a second collection today to benefit The Pantry, the food assistance program of our friends at Table of Grace.  It's not too late to give!  The Connors will be bulk-buying food donations, so you can contact them to contribute, or you can give to The Pantry online at gofundme: http://www.gofundme.com/thepantryjc
