Living in the Past

9/27/2015

Today, our Fellowship hosted Dr. Steve Wiegenstein, who talked about his experience writing historical novels and the lessons learned from that process of "living in the past."  We can easily fall into traps when thinking about the past, whether we idealize it with nostalgia or scorn it as an ignorant dark age with nothing to offer us.  The truth is that the past was as fabulously complex and contradictory as the present.  We can never perfectly reconstruct that complexity, but we can recognize that the people of the past shared our humanity and look with clear eyes for what we can learn from them.

Next Sunday, October 4th, 2015:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
Led by Rebecca Bax

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "While Error Can Be Fertile, Perfection Is Always Sterile," Rev. Mike Adamek
Parmenides said that Truth is not Truth unless it never changes.  Eternal means something never changes.  Liberal religion is criticized when we don’t announce that our faith is based on an shared eternal verity that never changes.  Whatever the status of Truth with a capital ‘T,’ our faith binds us to truths with a small ‘t,’ that never stop changing.  I will preach that this is true whether you are a liberally religious theist or humanist.
If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

The service will also include a Blessing of the Animals.  You are invited to bring photographs of special animals in your life, and to include a note with the animals' names and what makes them special.

Plus Children's RE - Volunteers Needed!

UUFJC News and Events this week:

The October newsletter and print calendar are ready!  Paper copies are available in the back of the sanctuary, and electronic copies are available on request.

Our Building Committee is requesting donations to repair our retaining walls.  We are currently working on the wall at the side of our building, but the retaining walls in front and back are also showing their age and we can't repair them now without additional funds.  Any help is appreciated!

Alexis Engelbrecht-Villafañe is organizing another "This I Believe" writing workshop.  This is an opportunity to compose essays that will be shared with the Fellowship in a future service, or just to explore with and learn from fellow members and friends.  Contact Alexis to get involved.

Project Homeless Connect is coming up October 13th, and volunteers are needed.  Contact Patt Behler.

Tomorrow, Monday, September 28th at 6:30 pm, Faith Voices for Jefferson City holds its monthly assembly at Quinn Chapel AME Church.  The assembly will be part of Faith Voices’ ongoing conversation on race.  Contact Katherine Connor.

This Saturday, August 3rd is the Jefferson City Fall Multicultural Festival.  UUFJC will have a booth, and the more people who help with it the better.  You can also help by donating baked goods or other items to sell.  See the sign-up sheet by the Fellowship entrance or contact Bob Antweiler.

Later Saturday evening at 6 pm is the NAACP Freedom Dinner at Capital Plaza.  See Katherine Connor.

Next Sunday, October 4th, the Worship Service Committee will meet at 1:30 pm.  Contact Alexis Engelbrecht-Villafañe to get involved in planning our Sunday services.

Also next Sunday is the annual CROP Walk, starting at 3 pm at Lincoln University Soldiers Memorial.  Twenty-five percent of what we raise will come back to our community for the Food 4 Kids program, a summer program to supply food to children.  The balance of the donations go to Church World Service for work they do around the world to help with food and clean water shortages.  Contact Katherine Connor to sign up as a walker or donor.

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, September 29th at 7 pm, Missouri River Regional Library hosts a Capital READ Author Talk with George Hodgson.  Hodgson is the author of Bettyville, the 2015 Capital READ.  He will read from his beautifully written, poignant, and often funny memoir, which deals with many themes—his  mother’s life, family relationships, caregiving, the decline of small towns, and coming to terms with age. A question and answer session and a reception will follow the reading. His book will be available for sale and signing.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This week, Capitol City Cinema presents "Meru" (through Thursday) and "Phoenix" (starting Friday).  For showtimes and more information, visit capitolcitycinema.org.
