Living our Legends

8/17/2015

Sunday, Rev. Nancy gave us a message about the place of myth in our rational age.  We don't believe in the magic of stories like the Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus.  Many of us don't even believe in the miracles of ancient religious stories.  But if we think of a myth as a story that is not The Truth but that participates in truth and reflects facets of it, then each of us is living a myth as we build our lives around our own unique and imperfect viewpoint.  Seeing through our own myths can be challenging and unsettling, but with self-compassion, it can move us into a new appreciation of our individual and collective myths --- and into a new, more empowered relationship with them.

UUFJC News and Events this week:

The UUFJC Members and Friends Directory has been updated.  Reference copies are available at the Fellowship near the phones, and more paper copies are in the back of the Sanctuary for those who want them.  Electronic copies are available in the Yahoo!Group file archive or on request.  Contact Laura Gilkey for an electronic copy or if you want your information updated, added, or removed.

Kim Connor has a new schedule ready for Religious Education volunteers, using the UUA's Tapestry of Faith: Faithful Journeys curriculum (which parents and volunteers can view online: http://www.uua.org/re/tapestry/children/journeys).  Contact Kim for more information.  Thanks to everyone who volunteers!

Alexis Engelbrecht-Villafañe plans to facilitate a "This I Believe" workshop in the afternoon on Saturday, August 29th.  It is a stand alone two hour workshop designed by the This I Believe Foundation.  You can visit the foundation's website at http://thisibelieve.org/.  Contact Alexis if you would like to attend this workshop or another "This I Believe" workshop that will be offered in the future.

And we received thanks again from Table of Grace for our donations of funds and school supplies for their Kids Club.  This past week over 100 children attended the event, and each one received a backpack with all the supplies they need to go back to school.  Thanks in turn to Table of Grace for their good work and for giving us the opportunity to help!
