This morning, Rev. Mike spoke about the relationship between the US and Japan after World War 2.  How do you change a country’s values?  How did Japan become an ally of the United States?  Under General MacArthur, the United States basically ran Japan for seven years, insisting on equal rights for all and supporting labor unions.  Some of MacArthur’s tactics were not what we as Unitarian Universalists would support.  Changing values is not easy and it is messy.  So, what came of the occupation of Japan?  The future.

Our Fellowship recently subscribed to Soul Matters Sharing Circle, a group of over 190 UU Congregations sharing worship themes and resources.  For more information and ways to get involved, keep watching our monthly newsletters, or contact Alexis.

Soul Matters also offers material for small groups.  If you would like to participate in or facilitate such a group, Alexis will be available in the forum room for the half-hour after service next Sunday, August 21st.  She will have more information and can answer your questions.

We need Adult Forum Leaders for August and September.  Contact Laura Gilkey.

Next Sunday, August 21st at 4 pm is the monthly Laughter Yoga session.  Free and open to all.  Contact Jan Harcourt.

Community Events this week:

This Tuesday, August 16th, Missouri River Regional Library presents an Author Talk by Karen Mitcham-Stoeckley.  Join this Missouri author of A Culinary Legacy from Escoffier to Today as she describes the discovery of her immigrant grandfather’s long culinary career in the French region of Provence. Mitcham-Stoeckley is a classically trained chef, winemaker, food writer, and former B&B owner. She will bring a dish from her new book to share with attendees. Copies of A Culinary Legacy will be available for purchase and signing.  Contact Madeline Matson.

This Thursday, August 18th at 7 pm, Columbia Area NOW meets at the Hy-Vee Restaurant at Broadway and Fairview in Columbia.  Non-members and new members welcome.  Contact Sue Gibson.
