Making Space for New Possibilities

This Sunday, we celebrated the Fire Communion, our annual ritual to greet the new year.  In a sermon via video, we heard words for the occasion from Rev. Christina Hockman of the UU Church of Corpus Christi, Texas.  Rev. Hockman reminded us that we need to be willing to let go of the old in order to welcome the new, to clear space for new gifts to flow into our lives.  This can be challenging.  Indeed our habits often serve us well, granting our lives order and efficiency --- but if we cling too hard, we can become rigid and paralyzed.  We can resist both letting go of the old and letting in the new due to our unaddressed fears.  Referencing the Buddhist nun Pema Chodron, Rev. Hockman suggested that our job is not to fight those fears, but to get to know them, to receive our own feelings with objectivity and compassion.

In the spirit of letting go of the old and welcoming in the new, those present were invited to write on a piece of paper something they want to let go of, and the papers were then burned.  (For several years now, we've used magician's flash paper for this, which makes burning the papers fun and impressive.)

Next Sunday, February 3rd:

Adult Forum - 9:15 am
"Building Community Bridges," Alicia White
Building Community Bridges is a non-profit organization that focuses on the training and assisting of the youth in our community, while attempting to bridge the gap that has been created due to single-parent homes, drugs and alcohol, and run-ins with the police and court system.
(Note this is a different Alicia White than the UUFJC member of the same name.)

Service and Religious Education - 10:30 am
Message: "Winning Back Trust," Rev. Mike Adamek
To trust again, after losing that trust is no easy task.  You can not make it happen.  It is something that is tenuous which must be nurtured through setbacks while you recommit to the process.  For  the longest time you wonder when trust is going to kick in again. Yet, there is nothing more important to peace of mind than the ability to win back trust.
If you have a joy or concern that you would like to have read during the Service, please submit it by noon on Friday through our website: http://uufjc.org/joys--concerns.html

UUFJC News and Events this week:

Our February newsletter and print calendar are ready.  Paper copies are available in the wall box near the coat rack.  Electronic copies are available at the links above or through our website, uufjc.org.

We are seeking feedback and submissions in our covenant drafting process; we need to come up with succinct and inspiring language that brings together the ideas everyone has offered.  See the February newsletter for more information, and see Katherine Connor if you’d like to offer a draft or suggestions.

The Art Committee will be polishing up the current art exhibit soon. We need helpers from the Committee and other members and friends in the fellowship who will help install pieces on the wall and another lovely piece as a hanging display.  Please contact Patt Behler about working  today and during this coming week. Thanks very much.

UUFJC will have a table at the Buddhist Center's trivia night, coming Saturday, March 2nd from 7-9 pm.  See Bob Antweiler to participate.

The Soul Matters Small Group will not be meeting this afternoon as previously announced.  To get involved with the group and join in-depth discussions of our monthly themes, contact Jim Davis.

Faith Voices for Jefferson City will not be holding their regular monthly assembly tomorrow, Monday, January 28th.  For more information on their ongoing work, contact Rev. Kim Woodruff: [email protected]

This Friday, February 1st, our building is reserved by a community group starting at 6:30 pm.  Please allow privacy.

The UUFJC Board meets next Sunday, February 3rd at 6 pm.  All are welcome to attend our board meetings.  Contact our President, Katherine Connor.
